I just bought a Rossi 92 stainless with a 16 inch barrel, which I'm setting up as my camping gun / truck gun. Strictly a defensive weapon.

Has anyone chrono'd the Double Tap .357 200gn load out of this gun? (if I'm in black bear country) Also, I'm assuming the Rossi can cycle and fire the round, it looks like the overall length is about 1.65".

How about the Double Tap .357 158gn "Bonded Defense" JHP? (if I'm not in black bear country)

I know about the Buffalo Bore data on it's website, but that's for the BB 180gn out of a barrel 2 1/2 inches longer. Although, this article does have some good data:

Thanks!

Check out ballistics by the inch

I have, unfortunately, their work didn't include any testing with the DoubleTap brand, which is a hotter loading. The BBTI guys also didn't include any data for a heavy-for-caliber 200gn bullet.

range report

Finally got the new Rossi to the range. I'm glad I brought a hammer and blunt chisel, because it was consistently shooting 5" to the left at 20 yards. I needed to wallop that front site a number of times to bring the point of impact to the point of aim.

The DoubleTap 200gn .357 did NOT feed. Surprisingly, neither did the DoubleTap 158gn .357 bonded JHP. Both would have jammed the gun badly if I wasn't paying attention. I had a difficult time extracting the unfired 200gn round, perhaps because it's longer than the rest.

What fed and grouped the best were the S&B 158gn FMJ.

Federal (American Eagle brand) 158gn SJSP fed fine and delivered nice tight groups dead center. The rounds felt punchy to the shoulder, too (sorry, no chrono!)

I had some Buffalo Bore 180gn .357, which fed fine, but in groups of three, I was usually getting one flyer outside the group. These were noticeably punchier to the shoulder. I wish I had some DoubleTap 180gn to compare and contrast, but I didn't.

Fiocchi 148gn SJHP fed fine, but surprisingly felt weak to the shoulder. Pretty consistently, I'd shoot six, and although the group was accurate, three would land about an inch outside the group.

Based upon this, I think my round for penetration will be the Buffalo Bore and my round for everything else will be the Federal SJSP.

Buffalo Bore

The 180 grain buffalo bore clocked at about 1950 fps from my Henry Big Boy.
