anyone chrono the 5.7x28 out of a long barrel?

just out of curiosity, does anyone have ballistic data on the 5.7x28 out of a 16 inch or longer barrel? I've searched all over the internet and can only find velocities for the Five Seven pistol, and the 10 inch barrel on the P90 submachine gun. The reason I'm asking is because when reading about the round it's often described as being similar to a slightly hot .22 magnum. But when I look at the actual data, what's often being compared is the 5.7 out of a 5 inch pistol barrel to the .22 magnum out of 20 inch or longer rifle barrel.

what's interesting to me is the performance of the 5.7 out of a ten inch barrel (40 grain bullet at 1800 fps, taken from wikipedia) are pretty similar to the performance of the .218 bee out of a 12 inch taurus revolver (46 grains at 1887 fps, taken from here) It seems like the 5.7 could have potential as a modern replacement for the .22 hornet for small game hunting.

I was curious about them too but I would rather have a 22 hornet or 218 bee. Then again I shoot a Contender tend to lean towards wildcats. A 22 K-Hornet is in my future as soon as I find the right barrel.

Hornet and 5.7 velocities

I have chronographed both. My son has a FN PS90. With the Hornady 35 gr. V-Max velocities were in the 2500 to 2600 fps range dependent upon the load. This is with a 16" bbl.

My Hornet, a Ruger #3 with a 22" barrel gets 3000 fps with 40 grain Nosler balistic tips.

We have used both on P-dogs (along with lots of other calibers). Out to 100 yards the 5.7 is pretty effective with the sights being the limiting factor on the PS 90. The Hornet works well out to 200 yards. Best part of the Hornet is the recoil is so slight that you can see your hits (or the occassional miss).

Not sure how either works on larger varmints as we have never had the opportunity to try them on bigger critters.

I have not chronographed my AR-57 yet but I plan on doing it next time I am at the range. I plan on loading for it when I empty some brass out and buy some dies. I think it will be fun to see what it can do.

Thanks I know. I am holding out for a 10 inch octagon 22 hornet barrel. I have a 14" 223 barrel if I want some long range 22 punch.

I have a 12" Contender barrel in 5.7X28mm. Only shot the 40 grain bullet weight at 2200fps the primers got loose some fell out.
