about to buy one when i read about possible problems with the locking mechanism....also saw a broken one at Sportsman's warehouse....

Anyone done torture/testing with the SERPA lock?

serpa lock? do you mean the retention devise on the serpa holster? if so I'll tell you about my experience with it.
bought one a while ago for my M9, mounted it on the chest of my IBA, lasted less than a week, the spring in the retention thingy broke, so I bought a tactical taylor holster, however a ton of the other guys in my unit have the serpa and have had no problems with it, manly using it on a drop leg rig.with a few chest rigs. I would suggest going with the serpa that fully covers the slide, keeps the gun cleaner longer.

I've been using one for daily carry with my SA Mil Spec .45 for several months. Love it! Nice and secure and no straps in the way of reholstering.
I was open carrying with it while playing kickball with my kids at the local park. Running full speed, kicking, leaping in the air... my weapon didn't move at all. I feel very secure that it will hold onto my weapon until I need it and then it delivers it instantly into my hand.
What else could you ask for?

From some AAR's of some training classes; small rocks/gravel would find their way way behind the switch, thus rendering the pistol stuck in the holster.
There is a report with pictures floating out on the net somewhere detailing how a small pebble/large sand piece rendered one inopperable. That would rule it out for me if I forsaw the possiblity of small pebbles/large sand pieces on my horizon.
I work with a dozen or so folks who like them. They tend to stick out more than most would like - my coworkers wear armor so its just right for them.

Occasionally I go with a buddy to an indoor airsoft place and got to play around with one of the SERPA holsters (actual thing, not a cheapie airsoft copy). The gun really does just jump into your hand, but stays put despite running around.
Of course, this was on a drop leg rig -- don't know how the ergonomics work with it on your hip. Unfortunately, no local dealer here, so I'd have to buy sight-unseen.

The human mechanics involved in de-activating the SERPA retention device causes N.D.'s. I have heard of two ND's in training so far (one using a real pistol, one using a sim) by highly trained pistol shooters.
If you think about it, you must press your trigger finger to release the pistol. Under stress, this will be done with disproportionate force and less fine motor-skill control. Thus, the finger continues to press and presses right into the trigger.
I frankly cannot believe this was totally missed in the recent SWAT review.

I've read a lot on this recently and I think it depends a lot on the level of training and type of weapon.
For instance, my FiveSeven pistol puts my finger on the safety switch (above the trigger) on a natural pull. My Glock puts my finger right on the trigger. Obviously the former is safer in a SERPA draw (plus having to switch off the safety is a plus as well). For the Glock, I will stick with my Bladetech, since I practice drawing without any force from my trigger finger.
I may get one just for the novelty and train with it to see if it's worth it for carrying. Worst case, I can resell it, or just use it for fun at the range. . .
