It usually only takes about 30 minutes for my background check to come back clean and I walk out with my new toy. Yesterday it took 4 hours. I know that's not that long, but it still is an increase of 8x's my normal wait. Has anyone else noticed this or is it just my luck?

I just waited 7 days for a trans of a 1923 Rem 11 and I have a C&R and 02 FFL. This is the first delay I have ever had. The people at Stonewall in Broadview Hgts, Ohio, state that they are also seeing a ton of delays, even on folks that are reg purchasers.

This sort of thing was popular during the Clinton administration, AND there are a ton of new gun buyers being called in all the time.

OTOH, I watched my daughter's current boyfriend clear in the usual 3 minutes a couple weeks ago. He's an Iraq II veteran....

Regards,

I always have to wait but i took my girlfriend in the other day. She's only touched a gun a few times but, you guessed it, she walked out with a gun! I finally got mu unique number the other day after waiting about 4 months. Havent tried it yet.

My UPIN works great. Just make shure the dealer calling in gives it to the person taking the call as some dealers aren't used to using it and might skip over it. The call wil be transfered to a different agent who can access your file. Mine has allways worked when called in by phone but twice I was delayed when they used computer online check. The dealers were good guys and immediately called by phone and gave the transaction number and asked why the delay when buyer had a UPIN. Received OK each time. UPIN doesn't guarantee instant OK but it's worked that way for me. I think that if it takes a minute or so extra time to access your records the computer program defaults to delay sometimes but with the phone call they just take the time to read your file.

I had this happen with me in FL on my last purchase.

Online purchase and gun shipped to FFL. I thought it would be a quick 30min check and walk out with it, as I have a FL CWP and should have no wait, but then I got a reality check.

3 days later - and this was not a handgun purchase - this was long gun (OK it was an EBR).

And then I took it with me on a fishing trip and we had a boating accident.

Yes, I have been experienceing delays. About 1 1/2 months ago, I purchased 3 handguns on 2 different occasions. I bought them at the end of the day and had a delay but had a proceed the following morning. A few weeks ago, I purchased a Remington 870 in a differnt store, but no now with a UPIN. That took 30 minutes. Yesterday, I went to another store to purchase a Kel Tec PF9...delay again. It's 1:30 pm, I haven't heard form them yet.

I noticed on page 2 of the letter sent by the NICS for the UPIN had a specific number that a FFL had to call to start the backgroind check. I don't think either the last 2 FFL's called that number. The next time, I will specifically inform the FFL to call the 1-877 number. I hate the wait.:cuss:

TCOV,

Thanks for sharing your experience. I called the FFL and asked them to call NICS to ask why, with a UPIN, there was still a delay. What happened was that the FFL mistook my "S" for a "5". Well, FFL called back and cleared it with no delay. I will pick up my new Kel Tec PF9 after work today. Whooopie!:):)

That's what I like about forums like this. I learn alot of stuff.

From a police standpoint

In New Hampshire, the law states that a Pistol/Revolver Lic. shall be issued within 14 days of application. The OP is part of the reason why this can take some time.

So...to clarify....at our little PD at least this is the way it usually goes.....

Someone will stop by and get the application from us. We give them a basic "crash course" on what they can/can't do with the permit. Once the paperwork is in and completed, that will start the ball rolling.

I put the application in my Chief's box (he's the only one that can issue them for our PD) and he starts his end of the paperwork (which he may/may not get to in short order depending on how busy) INCL. AN APPLICATION TO THE COUNTY/STATE FOR A BACKGROUND CHECK.....postage paid, mailed out, and thus starts the delay for days and days. The county will mail/relay the check back to us (who knows how long this can take?!?!:banghead:) Once they complete the process, then the Chief still needs to draft the permit, contact the applicant, get them to come back to the office and SIGN IN PERSON the permit......

This is a very rough example of "how it goes".....so depending on what state you live in, and the laws that are in place, you may just be waiting for a while. Ahhhh....the wheels of justice do INDEED turn slowly. As long as we are within the 14 days here we are safe! Hope this helps!:)

I've been a LEO for the past 20 years and for a long time I was getting "delayed" It was becomming a joke with my FFL holder since I could walk into the shop with a .45 on my hip, but couldn't leave with the 10/22 I wanted. Durring one purchase, My dealer mentioned this to the agent on the phone doing my background and they asked me a few identification questions and I have no had a problem since. It seems my ID info was similar to another person's of lesser character.

Just bought another handgun from a local shop 7/1/09, not at a gun show, took all of 5 minutes for the approval. The reason I say not a gunshow is because I have always experienced a long delay at gunshows. Hey, I'll test the time delay tomorrow, we have a gun show here in West Palm Beach and I plan on buying something.

With my SC CWP, I don't have to wait for the instant check, my CWP takes care of that.
Same for me in NC. Lesson here is get your CWP ASAP.
