Trying To Buy New Handgun; Background Check Delayed

ElToro,
That is the main reason why I can't move back to my home state of CA. I was born in Novato, CA, but I won't ever return until the Draconian gun laws are repealed. I think that McClintock would be a great leader for the state, but he would still have to deal with the state senate, and I don't think that he could get the sweeping changes we wants cleared throught the senate.

Prezzz,
I'm glad you got approved today. But I'll have to wait until Wed. to find out. I called the shop tonight, and they told me to call back then. This really sucks. Oh well. I know it'll go through, I just hate waiting.

Newshooter78,

Novato Ca., huh? One of my favorite golf courses is there. Indian Valley Golf club. My mom lives in Sausalito. I go to visit a few times a year, and play golf. It's like a whole different world from LA. out there.

I just got back from my FFL this afternoon. I show up about 3pm and he says
"can you come back about 4:30?". In the past the whole process has taken
about 15 minutes. He tells me they've reduced staff on the other end and
over an hour is common, with many returning delayed. He said he thinks it
their version of a five day waiting period. At 4:45 it finally shows approved.
One more hoop.

Steve

What is this NICS I keep hearing about? :) I haven't done one in a long time. Your CWP is all you need here. We do have a ridiculous 1 handgun per 30 days law, though.

ACP,

I'd rather put up with the wait than allow a criminal to possibly get a handgun because I'm inconvenienced for less than a day.

A) Do you think your inconvenience is going to prevent him from getting a gun, or even slow him down?

B) Do you think it's right that you should be penalized in any way, shape or form for his crime?

I went to Accurate Firearms here in Baton Rouge. They said they had a lot of checks get delayed lately. They don't know why. It has nothing to do with the individual though, they did say that much.

Greg L, I wouldn't think that would have anything to do with a delay, I had a TS-SCI as a crypto tech in USASOC up until my medical discharge in 1999 and I've not been delayed once with well over 15 "checks" in the last 7 months or so.......just an fyi.

I picked my new Colt up not too long ago. I'm finally glad to have it. It sucks to have to wait, though. Now I just have to get it out to the range. :D

Well I finally got my gun today, and took it for a spin right afterwards. I still don't know what the delay was for, but I'll just hope it doesn't happen again. Anyway, the wait was worth it. It's a good straight shooter, and I can't wait to get to the range again.

I use to get delayed everytime I buy a long gun and go through NICS. But here in gun owner hell (aka: Maryland) Handguns and several semiauto rifles require a 7 day waiting period :(

Any way:

I emailed the FBI from their web site (do a search on NICS) And asked about the delays, ever since then I been delayed at first then transfered to a "special agent" and approved. I'll find out tomorrow if that still stands, I'll paying off and picking up a Bushy Carbine that goes through NICS.

I'll paying off and picking up a Bushy Carbine that goes through NICS.

Jeepdriver-

There's a type of Bushmaster that doesn't require the 7 day wait? Wow, I learn something everyday!:D

Which type is it? I HATE spending my money and waiting for the holy "NOT DISAPPROVED", I would seriously consider making a purchase just on avoiding that...

Thanks!

iluvG.R.I.T.S,
I'm new to the area, and Barney's is the only public range I know of around here. I tried looking for a few others, but no luck so far. There is a shooting club here in town, but they are currently constructing a new range, and its members only. I forgot the name of it, though. Barney's is ok, except for the no CCI Blazer rule they've got. I was out there on Thurs., and me and another THR member will be there tomorrow (Sun.).

My checks go through immeadiately evey time - even with forgetting to put down SS#. My brothers always get delayed and they both have a FFL of one sort. It's all dependant on if that "red flag" pops up next to your name.

I looked at the "yellow form" when I picked up the gun. I accidentally switched two numbers of my area code (I just moved so it was an honest mistake). Maybe that had something to do with it. Otherwise, like I've said before...there's no reason my name would bring up a red flag, as it hasn't before.

The area code could have done it. If the number accidently didn't match any area code the computer would go "tilt!" and require someone too tell it what to do next. I think that was probably the root of you're problem.
