They are building a Sportsman's Warehouse in Las Cruces, NM and from it's appearance the building looks pretty big...Grand opening I believe is scheduled sometime late summer. It's nearby & was wondering specifically about their prices on handguns & ammo. I don't reload and was wondering are they comparable, say, to WallyWorld? Since I buy most of my range ammo from my local Walmart they might be selected in closing down the gun/ammo sales.

Didn't mean to be redundant on the subject as pointed out by a member; missed the earlier thread...Thanks D.J., will read the other thread...

You will have the best selection of guns you have ever seen. They stock a wall full of hand guns! They have EBR's! Their powder and primer prices are great! They have season sales that get you 10 percent discounts one every thing but firearms. Their ammo prices are decent, but I do not buy factory ammo.....

I've been to the one in Albuquerque several times and it's an impressive store. If there's something you need for outdoor sporting activities, Sportsman's Warehouse probably has it. I haven't compared prices much, but their selection of firearms, ammunition, and reloading supplies far exceeds anything else we have in Las Cruces. My wife's already worried.

We have had one here for years. They are an OK store if you are not looking to haggle on a price, bring in a trade, and you know exactly what you want.

The folks that run the gun counter are sales people and not gun experts. They do not carry quality low-cost firearms such as Kel-Tec or NEF but they will have every $500-$1000 gun you could think of. Thier ammo is good priced, on par w/ wally world and you get discounts when you buy bulk in-season ammo. Such as a case of dove loads around the beginning of dove season.

Thier fishing and camping departments are just as well stocked.

BTW, They used to have a 10% military and veteran discount, not sure if they still do, but they did at one point.

Check 'em out and enjoy!

I find the ammo is priced slightly
higher than walmart but they have
a larger selection.I also see quite
a few pistols in the 300-400 dollar
price range. All in all not a bad
place to spend some money.

We have had a Sportsman's warehouse for about 6 months now. In my opinion, it's been a mixed blessing. On the one hand, it's brought variety in that we were sorely lacking as a town at the northern end of the supply chain. I believe it caused one local sporting goods store to expand. Their customer service -- like that of all big box stores -- can really be really good or it can be pretty bad. My main concern right now is how badly they might affect the bottom line of the local stores. If they drive all of the local stores out of business (which rumor has it they may be trying to do), and then decide to raise prices or not carry certain things, we are in a world of hurt since we don't have viable mail order options for restricted shipping items or heavy/bulky items. Although I don't refuse to shop at Sportsman's Warehouse, I do check the local sources, and do buy at local places if the price is reasonably competitive with Sportsman's Warehouse. I do pay a little more, especially on powder, but in the long run if it keeps some local competition around for Sportsman's Warehouse, we are all better off as we're at the end of the supply chain in a small town.

The only experience I have with them is a punch set I ordered from them. That transaction went smooth as can be and, if I recall correctly, they provided me with email confirmations every step of the way (order, payment received, item shipped, etc.).

Sptsmns Whse

They beat the snot out of Gander Mtn, EXCEPT that, GM does deal in used firearms, and SW does not.

With the amount of stuff--and prices--that SW does have, they don't have to put up with the hassle of dealing in used stuff. (That's from their perspective.) And they're probably right. (Darn it. From my perspective.)

They have a tremendous selection of reloading components, with some strange little gaps, e.g. no 8mm Mauser brass for sale, although they have pretty much everything else, including some pretty oddball cartridge brass.

And since they're a big chain, the local management has only so much say in what they will and won't carry.

It's nice to just go get stuff, but there's always Midway et al. for the stuff they don't have.

I don't think the local SW has put any small stores out of business. Yet.

As a matter of fact...

There is a Sportsman's Warehouse near where I live (West Denver area). A while back I was down in Austin visiting my family. I decided to drive over to Georgetown and visit my friends at STI. While there, I started eyeballing some of the goodies in their safe. These are the guns they use for display at trade shows, etc...

The itch was geting to me and I asked Pauletta Skinner what it would cost me to have a nice Ranger II put together to my specifications. She quoted me a price and I wrote her a check. David Cupp made the modifications.

Skip ahead a couple of weeks. I walked into Sportsman's Warehouse to inquire about them handling the transfer of my new pistol. The firearm manager told me there would be no problem and that he would charge me a flat fee.

All seemed right with the world. Once the gun arrived I went down to fill out a 4473 and submit to the State administered instant check. I told the folks there at the counter that I might get a delay as I have a misdemeanor in my background. The NICS has delayed me a couple of times, but never have I been denied. This time I got denied by the State of Colorado. The folks at the store told me how to appeal the denial and that my gun would be in the safe. I thought there would be no problem as this was a misunderstanding and should be cleared up in a couple of days.

I called the CBI gun section and got specific instructions. I mailed off my appeal with supporting documentation that afternoon. The State has 30 days to act on an appeal from the time they recieve it. Reckon how long it took to get a response from the CBI? Thats right, exactly 30 days. I was told that the denial would stand.

I immediately got on the phone and asked to speak to the agent who signed her name at the bottom of the denial letter. I calmly tried to explain that the item in my record was a misdemeanor. She replied that she looked up the statute and called the DA's office and they told her the charge was a felony. By this time I was getting irate. I asked her if she looked at the disposition paperwork I had sent. That at the top of the document is says in VERY BOLD letters, "Misdemeanors". She replied that she didn't care, and that she had done her research and that was that. I told her as calmly as I could that I would call her back. I went to the Library and looked up the statute, chapter and section. It took me less than twenty minutes. I called the CBI again. I spoke the with the same agent and asked her to look up the same information I did and told her exactly where she could find it. After a pause she told me she would "try to work another angle on this", and that I should call back the next day.

The next day came. I called back. This time she told me that the denial would be reversed. I asked her how she came to that conclusion. She replied that they had checked with the NICS! Get it folks? They waited a full 30 days to do basically NOTHING, when they could have solved this in a day or two.

Now, I headed back to Sportsman's Warehouse, armed with my new transfer approval. The gun section manager wasn't at the counter as he was teaching a reloading class upstairs. I was confronted with a VERY RUDE individual who told me the gun had been sent back to STI. I asked why and he told me that it was in the store more than 30 days, so they sent it back. I asked, given that they know the state takes 30 days to act on any denial appeal, and given that it would take me a day or two more with getting a letter in the mail and all...Why the hell did they send my gun all the way back to Georgetown, Tx? I got a gruff reply that it was store policy.

Needless to say I left there angry that day, feeling like I had been rode hard and put away unhappy at every turn since getting back from Austin.

When I got home I called Pauletta Skinner at STI and asked if she had indeed recieved the gun back. She told me that Sportsman's Warehouse had called her and told her it was enroute and that they were not as friendly about it as they could have been.

Not wanting to go to bed unhappy, I went back to Sportsman's Warehouse to talk to the gun section manager. During that conversation, which was friendly, he told me that the store policy was indeed to hold the gun for 30 days and then to dispose of it. I asked him the same questions I asked the other gentleman... why do that when you know the state is going to take as long as they are allowed to act on an appeal. He told me it was store policy, but then said something I will always remember...

"...and then, WE had to spend fourty dollars to send it back to STI..." as though that was my fault! As though it cost them something to get the gun there in the first place, as though it was paid inventory. What a crock!

I then went to The Gun Room in Lakewood and asked them to handle the transfer. The owner introduced himself and told me there would be no problem and he would charge a flat fee (reasonable). The gun arrived in a couple of days (after I called Pauletta back and had her charge my card for another fourty dollars) and the State of Colorado gave me a "GO" on the instant check. I went home with my new Pistol. It is truly a joy.

The moral of the story? There are two:

1. The State will take the maximum ammount of time, and do it's best, to deny your rights. That's not an indictment of the employees, exactly, it is a statement of the nature of the beast. The instant check system is in the business of trying to find a way to say "NO".

2. Sportsman's Warehouse is a big-box store. They seem to have the idea and the attitude that they are in the gun business, you are not. They know things about guns and gun laws, you do not. They will do what they want to do and if you don't like it you can shop somewhere else, NEXT PLEASE! Their prices on the guns in the display cases on on the shelves are at FULL RETAIL. When I was in the gun business, ten years ago, I swore that I would always be friendly and courtious to my customers and NEVER act arrogant and condecending. That attitude will always bite you on the arse. A perfect example...did anyone read the piece in Gun List a couple of months ago about Jims Gun Jobbery in Fayetteville? Since they got big in the early 90's, they have had the same attitude. Anyone who lives in Fayetteville can attest to that.

I will now buy through my local gun shops, no where else.

Physician, heal thyself!

Pax Domini sit semper vobiscum

They have good not spectacular prices on guns, good prices on ammo and a very large selection except of defensive ammo, they refuse to carry the boxes of 50. They have a good selection of quality knives, optics and reloading equipment and components. The fishing dept is on par with gander which is to say not to bad at all. The one near us as two very good archery guys, a couple decent ones in the gun dept, and some well experienced camping people too. The camping dept is split between a lot of car camping stuff, and some serious back packing eqpt. You can find your titanium sporks, and you can find your 25 pound wall tent with 3 rooms.

Although not Nirvana, they are a pretty good place. Ours has a manager who listens. I have noticed changes based on conversations with him.

Appreciate all the replies...Couple of things mentioned really perked my interest besides the comparative pricing. Since it was mentioned that they sell used pistols, will they buy used pistols out right w/o a partial trade-in? I've reached the point in life where I need to unload some of my guns w/o purchasing more of them...I hate Pawn shops, too low, and Gun shows: forget it...Anyway, would Sportsman's buy outright?

Thanks again, all my questions were answered....Looking forward to the Grand Opening in August... P.S. Looks like I'll have to advertise in the newspaper to unload some of my pistols...Have had some good luck in selling & buying through this avenue.....MM

Somewhat heavenly....

....to me, anyway. It's a damn shame about that xfer story, Proficient, and I hate that happened. However...

I have had nothing but wonderful experiences there. The staff there is VERY courteous and helpful. Which says something, given the length of my hair and goatee (some folks just get nervous). These guys treat me with respect and dignity, and are always happy to spend a great deal of time with me, showing me guns I want to see (and new stuff I don't even ask about). They have the rock-bottom best prices on my next three intended purchases (Beretta Px4 and Cx4 and Browning Hi-Power). Who hates that?

They are also uber-helpful when my wife goes in there. They politely told me that, despite my apparent knowledge (which I will admit is limited), they will usually hand me a gun to keep me occupied:) and talk to HER about what SHE wants/needs. I find this practice to be ultra-pro and knowledgeable, and it gives me a chancs to dork around with other things that may eventually have an impact on my bank account. :)

Most of the guys there are retired law enforcement/military, most of them have CCW's, and nearly all of them have been in the gun business for more years than I've been breathing on my own.

Did I mention the prices? Quick comparison. Beretta Px4 Storm, 9x19mm. I've gotten prices from $579 to upwards of $600. That sweet hunk of polymer is a whopping $499 at the SW in San Antonio. That's regular price, not a sale price. Mo fabolus.

Great gun selection at pretty good prices.

In my store, ammo is over priced IMHO. WWB 9mm for like 8.00, no deal there.

If you reload, they have plenty of components on hand, which is often hard to find.

I have never bought any guns from them, but have picked up some cleaning items and some other misc stuffs.

Watch for sales. I bought a Ruger MKII for $175 because they were changing over to the MKIII.

I have had nothing but good experiences at Sportsman's Warehouse. Great selection, customer service, and fair prices. I am heading there this weekend to pick up some Velocitors.

I love Sportsmens Warehouse and have spent lots of dollars there. Its like being a kid in a candy store and the prices are better than Cabelas, Gander Mountain or Bass Proshop. You don't get the nice displays or stuffed animals, but who cares, I'm there to buy stuff.

We love the Albuquerque store. Even better now that there is a Sam's Club across the street. It gives me an excuse to look at the "toys" when the wife wants to stock up on provisions or buy the cheap(er) gasoline.

What really impressed me was this: They offer a 5% discount to active duty and retired military. I only found out about this after I had spent some considerable money in there, to include a Marlin 39A. After contacting the manager, he retroactively gave me the discount for all of my receipts. You can't beat that.
