My brother and I are trying to get into long range shooting and hunting but we can't find ANY ranges that have more than 100yd shots. I'm hoping to be able to hook up with some other guys here in central TX that have a place to shoot and wouldn't mind a couple of "newbies" tagging along with them. I'd love to meet some like-minded guys who enjoy long range shooting, who's brains I could pick as we get into the science of LR shooting. Or, if you know of a place to shoot at least 200+ yds somewhere within reasonable driving distance of Austin, please let me know.

I don't know what's happening to this world when a Texan can't find a place to shoot further than 100 yds! There used to be several places I knew, about 15-20 years ago when I stopped shooting to start my business, but they've all shut down!

If there's anyone on here that wouldn't mind helping out this re-tread newbie, please email me directly at: southtxbowhunter@gmail dot com or send me a PM. Emailing me would be a quicker way to reach me, though.

Thanks!

Nick

Thanks for the heads-up about the Eagle Peak range - I talked with them today and I'll be heading up there in the next few days. I think I found a great place to practice my shorter range shooting! The Austin Rufle Club is WAY too 'stodgy' and uptight for my tastes. I shot at country clubs and private clubs like that (i.e. Campfire Club of America) growing up and I'm not a big fan of those places. But Eagle Peak sounds like a great place for me and my brother to practice in a relaxed environment with a great range- one that's welcoming to everyone. Thanks so much for the info.

The Austin Rifle Club close to Manor, of which I'm a member, has 200-350 yard ranges. The 350 yard range requires all other ranges to be closed as you have to fire across them. You just need to submit a background check or CHL to the range, pay your yearly dues, attend an orientation and you're in. It's a great place, IMO. You don't have the idiots who sweep the firing line with their muzzle like at some other ranges. Everyone there is very responsible and helpful.

It's not stodgy, but rather safe. I take all my firearms (semi-autos are fine) there to shoot and we do it safely and have a good time. The rules at the club are there for a reason and I'm glad to have them. Great organization. In over 100 years of operation, there has never been an accident at the Austin Rifle Club.

If that type of safe and responsible environment isn't your cup of tea, then you should find another place that will allow you to do whatever you want, I guess. The types of places that allow reckless behavior are exactly what I've learned to avoid after having been swept a few times and seen some amazingly reckless behavior with firearms.

Eagle peak is nice, but just as with any other public range you will have your fair share of idiots. I've had a gun pointed directly at me during a cease fire and had to yell at the guy to put the gun down and keep it pointed down range. Also eagle peak is a little strict with there rules...No FMJ rifle ammo, 1 shot per second, no standing rifle ranges, etc... I much prefer ARC.

Austin Rifle Club isn't really that "stodgy". I say this as a 28yr old who owns Class III items and EBRs.

Sure the folks there are generally older, but I've been there plenty of times where I was the only shooter on the range and could do pretty much (within rules and safety) whatever I wanted.

I haven't had anyone there hassle me about having an AR-15 or anything, and it is nice not to have random idiots trashing the place for kicks like at some more public ranges.

It's a minor hassle to get "voted in" and take their safety intro, and if you ever have to deal with the leadership bureaucracy (as I had to to organize a THR meet at ARC) there's plenty of the classic "retirees who make rules so they can feel important like they did before they retired", but in terms of just everyday shooting it's a great range. Convenient location, low fees, and open during all daylight hours. No full auto, but no rules against suppressors or EBRs.

Seriously, it's way better than Eagle Peak or Lone Star for the money/location, go with ARC. If you want longer range matches (over 200m), I think there are some shoots up in Temple occasionally.
