Turning my 627 into an open gun and was interested to see if anyone had a good 38 load that will make power factor in ICORE and make full use of the ports. I have lots of 38 data and haven't tried any yet since my gun isn't complete but thought I would ask you all to see if anyone has already traveled down this road. Thanks.

"YOU GOT THAT INNA 5.5" REDHAWK?"

Suggest slow(er) Vihtavuori Oy powders..........and Starline cases.............and Federal primers..............and tight crimps..............

I was under the impression ICORE had a very low power factor--something like 120? If that's right, then the ports are going to be pretty well irrelevant in an N-frame. I've heard that some folks shooting your gun in ICORE are loading 38 Short Colts (brass from Starline, I spose) because they can make this low-threshold power factor and still have those short cases for speed loading and ejection.

Are there different power-levels in ICORE? I wouldn't really expect the ports to become a factor on the 627 until you're shooting well into the .357 range--maybe a bowling pin load, PF closer to 200.

I've shot a lot of .38 in different loads at IDPA PF levels--125 and a bit more; but let us know what exactly you need.

You are right, the power factor for IOCRE is 120. I know that I will be well above it to get the ports to function which is not a concern. Last years IRC I shot a 610 and my loads were in the 145 pf range. I do it more for fun then to win (okay, I would like to win but Jerry and Vic won't stop shooting) so I don't get into the whole "gaming" it thing with really light loads. I have seen several people using the short colts that you were talking about but upon further investigation it seemed like way too much work. Besides, the fastest revolver man in the world shoots 38 spl's in a comped gun so it has to be doable. Wonder if he would share his load data.....

If you're talking about Jerry Miculet, I've seen and handled some of his ammo.

It's guess what.............
A home cast 148gr DEWC, looks to be from a Saeco mould;
Uses 2.7gr of Bullseye
Mixed brass, some nickle plated, most lightly tarnished;
(exactly what most PPC shooters have been using for 30+years)

Loaded and fired by the "Bushel Basket-full", through what are essentially out of the box guns. He uses full strength rebound springs to "push" his finger back to get the speed he's capable of.

He probably shoots a heavier load in "sactioned" matches with power minimums, be He said he was using the old "standard" wadcutter load for the speed records- 2.7 of bullseye.

BTW; I witnessed the last round of "Speed" records he shot. He makes it look really easy, too.

But, I can't make my fingers move that fast !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

-And I've only shot an estimated 3 million rds of .38 in the last 30yrs since I shot my first club match at 17yrs old.

GREAT SHOOTING JERRY !!!!!!!!!!
