Anyone have a SW 1911?

Does anyone have one of the 1911's made by Smith/Wesson? I looked at one the other day, and I'm in love.

For those that have one, what do you think of it?

Last year, I picked up two SW1911s at a pawn shop in a deal too good to pass up. I'm a diehard Colt 1911 guy. I thought I would use the SW1911s as trade fodder at an upcoming gun show.

While I was waiting on a gun show to come around, I shot them. I still have them. I won't trade them off. I now have a SW1911PD on layaway that I plan to use as a carry gun.

I think that about wraps up my opinion of them.

As you probably already know, Smith 1911s are one of the few 1911 approved for sale in Mass. The only other 1911s that are approved for sale are Para's, and one model from SVI. Used Colts, and other 1911 manufactures are going to be very expensive in this state. I would try out a new Smith vs Para and see which gun you like more. To add, a purist might have issues with Smith's version of the 1911 since it does not follow strictly to the original Browning design. It has a external extractor and it is a modernized Colt Model 80. Though in theroy the external extractor might make the gun more reliable than the internal ejector 1911s.

We are fortunate to have them in MA. The best you can do for a basic 1911 that goes bang. You could spend alot more on a Kimber and take a bigger gamble.

I have a 1911PD (Scandium) Commander with about 900 rounds through it. I am impressed. S&W has given all of us another very good option for 1911s.

I bought the S&W1911PD with Crimson Trace grips last year. Very nice gun. Accurate, reliable, very good trigger out of the box and easy to carry. The light weight guns aren't as much fun to shoot 400-500 rounds at the range. Get a full size steel/stainless for that function. My friend just bought the 5" "billboard" model used. I've shot it as well. Great trigger, very accurate. He got it from a guy at our range who had it set up for IPSC but ran into a financial crunch with a job disaster. What's a 1911 thread without pics?

I picked one up last fall. I haven't put a lot of rounds through it yet but so far I really like it. I don't shoot factory ammo and it has tolerated my reloads quite well.

I agree with Robctwo. It's a great carry gun, but you don't want to go to Thunder Ranch or Gunsite with it as your only gun. Work it up, break it in, and carry with confidence.

I have the 1911PD with Crimson Trace grips also. It is quite well made and I am impressed with it. In about 800 rounds, it has never failed in any way. The light weight is great for a carry pistol and I have been carrying it some, along with a few other carry pistols.

I have the 5" Blue Steel model.

I absolutely love it. Around 3,000 rds and never a failure. So accurate it even makes an average shooter like me look good. I've had 3 other 1911 pistols, but this is the best so far.

As soon as S&W expands their melonite treatment beyond just the one model (sw1911pd tac rail) on which it's currently offered, I'm down. Commander version, or at least something without a rail.

It amazes me they've broke that barrier; afaik the only manufacturer with a factory nitro carb treatment (not finish, but the hardening of steel itself, like tennifer), then just limit it to that one model. Even among the other models in the "pd" series, none of them have it. Guess 1911'ers in general don't care.

Of course, still trying to find out how far the melonite goes- how many parts etc. Just the slide? Or hammer, internals etc.

Only negative I've heard is poor beavertail fitting. No clue. If it works, not a big deal to me.

The only issue I have with my SW1911 Gunsite is that it doesn't come in a CCO-style package.

Otherwise, excellent gun.

I can't begin to tell you how pleased I am with my own Smith & Wesson, all steel, blued 1911SW.

I take it to our local range almost every weekend, and it eats anything I put through it. Thousands and thousands of rounds, mostly my reloads.

Out of the dozen or so the handguns I own, this 1911SW is, without a doubt, my favorite.

I have a 1911PD. Runs like a raped ape. Accurate, reliable, and for what it cost the best 1911 on the market, IMHO.

I'm a total S&W fanboy after their 1911 and the M&P, and Smith was a company 10 years ago I wouldn't have taken their guns for free. Quite a turnaround.

I have a S&W Scandium Commander that I had Bobtailed, of my 7 1911's it is my absolute favorite and my IWB carry gun.

I bought my S&W 1911 from one of the first batches available.
It was on the recall list for a firing pin safety issue that was never an issue on my pistol but the gun was sent back to Smith for the warranty repair anyway.
I have extensively reworked the pistol from the factory basic model and since fired several thousand rounds through the gun without any problems.

I admit I do not shoot the gun like I used to because I went to an Heckler and Koch USP but I have no intention of ever selling this Smith pistol either.

I have a 108282 (5", 8+1, Novak adjust, SS, 39 oz!), it's pretty tight with zero rattle. Much more accurate than me with a nice crisp trigger. Zero failures so far, but I have less than 500 rounds through it. I personally prefer shooting the looser, lighter Commander-sized 1911s, but the 5" was on-sale and too good a value to turn down.

I'm not sure if applies to all S&W 1911s, but the field-strip of mine is a little more convoluted or involved than a typical semi-auto (or even other 1911s).

As far as build quality, reliability, & operation I pretty much consider it flawless. If you're in the market for a 1911, you can be pretty confident in selecting S&W.

I just bought a SW1911SC in January. Its a terrific pistol. Shoots to point of aim, right out of the box. No FTF or FTE at all. Mostly WWB. I will never willingly part with it.

I have the same weapon as my friend PaladinX13, and its been a
super weapon thus far. These basic 5" all stainless steel 1911's are one
of the best kept secrets in the firearms business. I already owned a new
Les Baer Thunder Ranch Special 1911; but got interested in the S&W
after my friend Joe Hatley starting showing those great pic's,
and talk'in 'bout what a fine firearm the S&W (#108282) really is~!
