Thinking about buying a very nice police trade in for $300. Just wondering if anyone had any experience with these. All stainless nine near as I can tell.

Big fan of the 5906 ... the older models with the recurved trigger guards and arched backstraps are one of the best-lookin' of the old "wondernines." A bit heavy, but usually 100-percent reliable and capable of more than adequate, sometimes excellent, accuracy. Everyone's handgun collection should have one of these ...

I have a 5904 (same thing but blued) that I got for $275. Well made and 100% reliable. I'm not a big fan of slide mounted safeties (or the cursed mag safety)or it might be one of my favorite pistols. Lots of LE carry the 5906 and like it.:)

I've got a used 6906 that is very similar that I picked up as a used police pistol and have been pleased with it. I'm not the expert that a lot of the fellows on here are though so I might be easy to please. No problems so far. I gave $325 for it.

Used 5906s are some of the best buys in handguns. I've never had a malfunction of any kind. The trigger reset is comparable to a Glock or 1911 and the DA pull very smooth. Mags are easy to obtain. Good, heavy, reliable house or range guns.

An online dealer has several and one that is almost like new so based upon your all input, I think it is a good deal. I will post pics of course when it gets here.

I am on a 9mm pistol collection binge right now. Have a Beretta 92fs, Glock 17, and think this smith will fit in real good.

If you like your Beretta then you will like the 5906.

I had one that I got it cheap as a police trade-in and it was cruddy. I tore it completely down and had to use Comet to get the crud off the frame. It shot well, the trigger was OK, but I got an offer on it so it's gone.

Well, I dropped the bomb and bought one. It will be delivered to the ffl probably on Thursday or Friday. I ordered it from Summit gun broker. The gentleman was very nice and said that he had some with the square trigger guard that looked almost brand new. For 300 bucks I think it is going to be a good deal. I had him throw in an extra mag.

I will post pics when it arrives.

Never had a smith pistol before. Seems like this model is a good one to have.

Excellent work gun

The 5906 is an excellent work gun. Congratulations on your purchase! :)

It is a nice, well made, all steel, rock solid Smith and Wesson. Accuracy is fine for personal defense purposes. The parts will last a lifetime, and it is very reliable. Mags are plentiful and not expensive.
:)
Congratulations, again!

I have one and I love it. I used to have a 915 (similar, but blued slide, alloy frame and non-ambidextrous safety) and I loved it, but I traded it as part of a Sig P-226 buy.

Anyway, I actually got mine from Summit on Gun Broker, too. Mine is from a run that has no magazine safety from the factory. I was very happy with the deal I got, even after paying for shipping and local FFL transfer fee.

Congrats, you have a real deal there. I have two from back when that I paid quite a bit more for than $300.. They shoot better than I do and have never failed to do what I ask. Like them a lot.

A fine, solid, basic meat & potatoes gun. I have a couple of PD trades, a 5946 and 6906. My 5906 I bought new right after the announcement was made that the standard 3rd Generation autos would be discontinued in favor of the TSW guns. Two things: Hogue rubber grips and replace the recoil spring with a new unit. You have no idea how well the gun was maintained and/or how much it was shot. I know a few officers. Most should maybe 100 rounds a year (50 for qualifiers, the balance for "practice" right before the annual qualifier). A few are hard core shooters and shoot the hell out of their duty guns. Niether they nor the department issue replacement recoil springs. Many of these guns have nights sights that are exhausted. If you replace them get someone who is trained specifically to remove and replace these sights. Bare minimum a S&W armorer. Better yet, return the slide to the factory for installation. Too many "gunsmiths" end up muscling the sights and damage them.

Owned several. Have a 6906 police trade in now and I can say the 59xx series was a well thought out solid gun. Way better than the older 659 (it was reliable but not great in the accuracy department) and the older 59 series that had problems jamming (as my M39 did back in college.)

And the curved trigger guard models tend to be better made. I perfer mine with chromed hammers and triggers.

I bought one on a whim (it appeared in one of my all time favorite movies) a few years back. At first I was somewhat embaressed by my actions. After all, who buys a gun just because it looked cool a movie? I kept the pistol for about six months, never bothering to shoot it. It just didn't seem as shootable as my other weapons. Finally, I decided to sell it.

But I wanted to get in at least one range trip before getting rid of it. Just for the heck of it. So I went to the range with it and two boxes of WWB ammo. I loaded up and fired at a target seven yards down range. I was very surprised to find that it was quite comfortable to shoot. I continued firing and making good hits out to 30 yards.

I ended up enjoying the experience so much that I kept the pistol. It's my second favorite 9mm now.

To answer your question honestly, probably almost everybody but especially me sometimes.

I think the two intrepid agents in the X-Files used 5906's for at least one season, but an LEO friend of mine helped turn me on to the pistol originally.

Gun might arrive at the FFL tomorrow. Looking forward to trying it out and reporting on it here.

The 5906 is standard issue to many LE agencies. They are reliable and with the one you purchased, if and when it faulters, S&W will repair it for free. You got a good price and it should last until you trade it away for a Sig. :)

I like mine. I have put ~2000 rounds through it & have had 5 or 6 malfunctions. Most were in the 1st 600 rounds. Mostly magazine issues. I think it may need a 3906 little brother.
The Hogue grips are definitely recommended.
I got mine from Summit as well.
