I know some people around here don't like Dick's...my experiences with them have been so/so...but they do have a gun cabinet for a low price, that looks pretty nice.

8-Gun Cabinet by American Furniture Classics

I don't have kids or anything, I'm not really concerned with safeguarding the guns (or else I wouldn't want a glass cabinet.) I just need something to put the guns in, that would display them nicely.

It says "solid wood and wood veneers." I'm not a fool - I realize that the term "solid wood" can be stretched pretty far. On the other hand, as long as the stuff looks nice, I don't care if there's plywood underneath it. Here's a picture of it.

Does anyone have this case? Has anyone seen and handled it up close? Is it a piece of junk? The price seems kind of too good to be true. But I'd rather have the extra money for more guns or ammo.

I can't comment on it's quality, but I can't help but think that burglars would love it if more of us bought gun cabinets like these. I'd love to display my guns in my home, but, at least in my case, I have to realize that I may not be 100% in control of who sees my "display".

I've thought about it...but I'm fortunate enough to live in a very very safe small town, and don't associate with any shady people. I really am not worried about burglary.

my .45 sleeps beside me but nothing wrong with having a nice gun case to put your rifles in I have one that houses my shotguns and a few .22's as far as the quality of the case itself as long as it holds your rifles how can you go wrong with a decent price?

"solid wood and wood veneers" is a code, but it doesn't mean plywood. It means particle board, which is compressed glue with sawdust in it. At least if it has a real wood veneer it'll look like firniture. Most of the real junk they sell at Wal-Mart doesn't even have a veneer, it's just particle board with am image of wood somehow applied to the outer surface.

Also, the fact that it says "easy to assemble" is a hint that it's not real furniture. It's knocked down, and real furniture can't be shipped that way because of the joinery. This thing will do what you want and it'll probably look okay as long as you don't abuse it at all, but don't think you're getting "furniture" for that price.

I don't think solid wood = particle board.

They surely must have one on display.

Check it out.

If it looks as good as the picture and seems solid then go for it!

Nah I'm not going to have any pretensions about fine furniture here, all I care about is that it's a functional gun cabinet. I'll put it together, glue it tight if it's loose anywhere, and use it as a functional item. As long as the wood veneer looks okay, I'm good to go. Some day when I'm a millionaire, I'll get a real nice cabinet, but as for now, I think this one will do OK.

As to the particle board: the Sportsman's Guide website does say:

This rich American Furniture Classics 8-Gun Cabinet is richly finished hardwoods and wood veneers, no particle board, for long-lasting great looks.

I would hope that they're telling the truth - if not, isn't it false advertising?!

My guess is that the door frame is solid wood and the case sides and top are particle board with wood veneer, and that the back is 1/4" plywood.

If the sides are veneered plywood rather than particle board, that would be even better.

..."I'd rather have the money for more guns".....Sorta answers your own question I think.

It should work as long as your expectations aren't real high in terms of the quality of this piece of furniture. I'd keep my long guns in it that don't fit in my safe.

I'm not really concerned with safeguarding the guns

Personally I think that when you own a firearm (or more than one) you also assume the responsibility for SECURING that firearm to the best of your ability to do so and a display cabinet like that one (Firearms on display behind a thin sheet of cheap glass) does not "fit the bill". If someone did steal your stuff I'm certainly not going to blame YOU for the criminal activity but I would want to feel that I'd done a little more to make life difficult for the thief.

I'm fortunate enough to live in a very very safe small town, and don't associate with any shady people. I really am not worried about burglary.

Yup, that's what everybody thinks...until the smash n' grab happens. It is a lot like the folks who look at us and say "but it's safe, why would you possibly need any guns.

Keep in mind that there are still plenty of small towns with very little crime in them. They don't get any attention because they're notable for the lack of notable criminal activity.

OTOH, if you thing you live in a Mayberryeque paradise make sure your impressions fit the facts so that you don't do a disservice to yourself or your community.

A handy cable lock passing through the trigger guards and then to a metal bar across the back of the cabinet wouldn't be obtrusive and would certainly act as an impediment to the armature or teen punk thief wanting to smash and grab the guns in the cabinet. The thief prepared with a set of bolt cutters is a little less likely to be encountered in true small town, low/no crime communities.

In one month I'm moving to a third-story apartment, in a semi-upscale suburban area, right on a main road. I'm really, really not worried about a break-in.

I read about break-ins every now and then in this town, but they're quite rare, and they're always in either the shady area on the outskirts of town, or in the cheap student apartments right next to the stadium where everyone is staggering drunk all the time - neither of which are anywhere near where I'm going to be living.

JMHO, but I think the days of being able to display guns in a glass cabinet are long gone. Too many thieves and maggots around these days, and small town America is being overran with meth addicts who will steal ANYTHING to feed their addiction.

Maybe you're not too concerned about loosing your guns, but be concerned about them ending up on the street in the hands of criminals. This is the era of gun safes, not display cases. I wish it weren't so, but I'm afraid it is. At least in my opinion. I have some that I'd LOVE to display.

Just got off the phone with the company that makes the cabinet, American Classics. They told me: no particle board.

I already have the Dick's score card, which gives you 10 dollars for every 300 "points" you score. I think at this point I've racked up enough to save a little money on the cabinet.

Thanks for the input everyone. I'm lucky that I live in a town where people leave their doors unlocked, you can feel safe pretty much anywhere, and 95 percent of the crime is drunk and disorderlies from undergrads making the bar crawl. Like I said, I'm not too worried about break-ins and even if a burglar did decide to hit this well-lit apartment building right on a main street, I don't think he'd pick a third-story window to try to break into.
