Anyone heard anything more about military going back to 1911? (or .45ACP at least)

above said question. I had heard that they had recommended ditching the 9mm Berretta and going back to the .45 ACP. Whether they choose the old style (and proven) 1911 A1 was up for debate.

My vote would be for the 1911 A1 (even if you want all the high cap stuff, SA makes a 1911A1 double stack 14 round magazine 1911)

It's been discussed at length, like the previous poster said.

Short version of the story --

a) No army wide replacement for M9 at this time. USASOC is still looking for a replacement for the special operations community.

b) M1911A1 would not have met the requirements for the JCP for at least one reason (single action was not an option). The round count would have been fine using 8 round flush-fit and 10 round extended mags, but double stack 1911, like the Glock 21, would not meet the ergonomic requirements.

c) There are some claims that the 1911 is back in the running now that the contract is just for USASOC. I'm not sure how realistic this is -- my money remains on the HK 45 or the Sig 220, personally.

I just read an article that the us military ordered a crapload more M9s and over a million new magazines.

I don't think it is going anywhere for a while.

This notification is to inform Industry the Combat Pistol requirement is postponed indefinately. USSOCOM will no longer issue a Request for Proposal.

So maybe the Army's FHS (Future Handgun Sytem) that was merged w SOCOM's SOF CP into the JCP that became the CP will be back?

While we are waiting, the Army has IDIQ (indefinte delivery/quantity) contracts for up to 70,000 more M9s and 14 million (yep, million) more M9 mags. ;)

That'd be why I call the Beretta 92 / Taurus 92 frame the if-it-all-falls-apart SHTF pistol. No matter WHAT happened to civilized society, I don't think you'd ever be unable to find parts and mags, at this point. :)

It was red hot issue for a while, but now it's been put on the back burner. Some units have trials to test samples for their use specifically but nothing widespread.
