Anyone heard of a Russian .22 TOZ-78?

Saw a Russian rimfire rifle called a TOZ-78. It was very cheap looking, but had a surprisingly good trigger. It had a CHEAP, light yellow stock with a fake dark forend tip. Had a magazine and 3 extra mags. Had some sort of screw-on bushing on the muzzle. The threads were too coarse for it to have been for a supressor. the shop wanted $120 for it NIB.

Has anyone ever heard of these? Know anything about them?

I purchased one a couple of years ago. The adjustable trigger is nice, barrel is free floating. The only negative thing that I can think of about mine is the fact that it does not like to feed on hollow points. The fit and finish on mine is fairly nice for the price I paid new. It's a pretty accurate little gun. Oh, the scope rail is some metric or other of the wall size.

Ha - that picture almost makes the gun look respectable. The model number on the one I picked up is TOZ-78-04. Don't know what the 04 means, but I wish I had not bought it. $120 when I could get a CZ 452 Scout for $40 more...

From what I have seen on the early Russian websites when they first put them up in english the models of rifles/shotguns were listed with different "-0#" to denote the model had a different barrel length and/or stock design/type of wood.

TOZ 78-04

I am considering buying a TOZ 78-04 here in the UK, but a firearms dealer has told me that it is only capable of holding a 2" group (5 rounds) at 50 yards. Does any one know if this correct because I don't want to waste £149 ($270 approx.) ? for £230 I can get a CZ 452 varmint rifle.
Any replies would be gratefully recieved.

spend the extra cash and get the CZ.with the other it could be a major pain if you broke something a needed a part.cz customer service is the best.

Greg, check over there, too. I think I've read it's a 1" rifle, but the shooters are RFC will set you straight.

The new Winchester Wildcat is a TOZ 78 and I want one bad. Unfortunatly I haven't been able to find one or any information about where to find one.

I have one and the 2" at 50yards thing is total bunk! I've gotten 1.25" at 100yds with mine. It will feed all ammo I've tried (and I've tried lots of types). The muzzle is threaded and comes with a thread protector. In Europe these rifles are sold with suppressors hence the barrel is threaded. That "cheap" stock is a laminated stock that is proportioned for a full grown man. I looked at the CZ's and couldn't get past the gritty bolt movement. Plus more often than not, the CZ's are hundreds more than the humble Tula. The barrel is free floated and the "metric rail" works just fine with my standard .22 rail clamping rings. The only three things I don't like about the rifle are the safety and the bolt knob. The safety is alongside the magwell and is too far to operate with your shooting hand on the grip. The small bolt knob was too hard for me to operate easily so I molded some epoxy over it to enlarge it. The final point is that I lost one of the four supplied magazines and can't find a source to replace it. Although I'm getting by with three it'd be nice to pick up spares.

the toz is their scaled back bench shooter type, sporterized, and without all the bells and whistles. the metal work, trigger, bbl, etc., on them is very good, it is basically a copy of a cz. Don't let them fool you, that is a fair price for that, and yes , it will shoot better than that as well.

I have to say, I have shot Rockstar.esq's gun, and I was pretty impressed with it. It really is a nice shooting little gun, and it isn't terribly expensive. As he mentioned, the biggest downfall that I can see is finding stuff for it. As he said, his rifle is substantially more accurate than 2" at 50 yards. I can't say that I know much more about these rifles past his, but my guess is that any rifle that shoots groups that large is probably an anomaly as opposed to a true representative of what the rifles can do.

TOZ 78-04

I would just like to thank all those that replied to my questions regarding the TOZ 78-04, in the end I was offered a Valmet Finnish Lion .22 target rifle second hand for £75 ($135 approx) which I intend to customise at some point.

There was a sale on these in Canada a while back and I bought one for $100 CDN. For that price, I can't complain. Scoped it with a $50 scope from an old Cooey .22. It is a real tack driver. I've seen keyhole-style groups at 50 yards from other shooters and in my hands it easily outshoots my (stock, scoped) 10/22 at that range. I would say it is an accurate rifle and that seems to be the consensus up here.

OTOH you are likely to have difficulty finding parts for it. I didn't have the $$$ for a CZ at the time, but for $127 shipped to my door including taxes, I can't complain about the performance of my TOZ-78. If you're shooting it a lot over the long term, I would recommend the CZ. It just made economic sense (and still does) for me to have purchased the TOZ.
