I'm looking for a rifle instruction course near Austin, TX. I have target practiced with rifles since I was a little kid and know the ins and outs of rifles more or less. But I would like to really understand 'the art of the rifle' and get some real training on shooting in different positions, using slings, etc. I would eventually like to compete in Hi-power competitions but feel I am unprepared right now.

Does anyone know of an instructional rifle course taught in or near Austin? There is a gentleman in Ft Worth teaching an NRA rifle basics course, and one man in Houston who would teach the same course but he needs to find an appropriate gun range. I can't believe that there isn't one being taught up and down the I-35 corridor between San Antonio and Waco.

Any help would be appreciated.

Isn't that "Just Raffles" place in South Tejas? Maybe check that out?

Didn't I see somewheres that the TSRA offers clinics? Or, our gun clubs up here do that, maybe check that out?

Don't we have a couple of THR members that are always posting stuff offered around there?

Have been through General Purpose Rifle at TR, Inc., but Heidi told me couple of weeks ago that everything was booked before they escaped in '05.

Not really "near" Austin, but not that far away, either.

Top notch instruction by professionals for comparatively low prices.

And while it's not "Hi Power" shooting, it is rifle shooting on a rather advanced level.

I've been through both their Basic Precision Rifle and Advanced Phase I courses.

Thanks for the info guys. I'll give the guys at Austin Rifle Club a call.

Austin Rifle Club holds a hi-power match on the first Sunday of every month. You do not need to be an expert to attend and participate. Just show up with a rifle, 88 rounds of ammo, eye and ear protection and any other suitable gear you might already have like spotting scope and stand, shooting mat and or coat. You will find a really helpful and cordial bunch of guys ready to welcome you and help you get started. Show up about 0800 and be prepared to have fun until perhaps 1300 hrs. I think the cost is $8 or $10 dollars.
