Anyone know anything about these Maxepidition Ferox Folders?

Looks like a nice inexpensive knife to throw in the vehicle, backpack etc. However there is a big difference between inexpensive and cheap. It seems I could buy a handful of these and stash in various kits, pouches and such so that there would always be a knife handy. But I know one gets what one pays for so does anyone have any experience with them?

5Cr13 heat-treated to 56/59HRc

They're too new for much experience out there.

I wouldn't be very happy seeing hardness with a range that wide and I sure wouldn't want to see this steel with a hardness as low as 56.

For a little more I'd rather pay for an 8CR13MoV Spyderco.

I don't know anything about those but a fixed blade Mora is a good quality inexpensive knife that does fine in my backpack, glove box, boat, etc. and I can buy 4 of them for what that one costs.

Same here. 58 would be my lower threshold, and I would prefer to be in the low sixties, in general, truth be told. I don't know much about that particular alloy, though.

Jeff, as hso noted, a few more $ gets you a Spyderco Value Line folder with 8cr blade and almost certainly a more consistent heat treat. Here's a link to those - http://www.cutleryshoppe.com/search.aspx?find=tenacious.

Also, for literally $5 more each you can get a Benchmade HK Pika with 9cr blade at 58-60 HRC - http://www2.knifecenter.com/kc_new/...and Koch Pika Models&bwSKUdatarq=bmhk&k=pika&. The Pika was originally offered as a Benchmade branded economical alternative to the AFCK, and the current HK branded version is even nicer than the old BM branded model.

In addition to the better blades both the Spyderco and Benchmade lines linked above also have ambidextrous tip up or tip down clip mounting options. It's not a deal breaker not to have that option, but it's a nice bonus feature.

Let me also suggest that, if you had to go with a folder of unknown quality, a backlock would be a better idea than a liner lock.
