rifle is a JC Higgins Model 30 .22lr autoloader. Made by Sears Roebuck and Co.

I still live with my parents, and even though neither of them are keen on guns, they trust me and don't mind me having them. I don't leave them around and keep it all locked up. My dad pretty much gave me this rifle; it was his dad's old "screwing around gun", and it pretty much got neglected, being left in the garage for God knows how long. He said that since he never uses it, that I could have it and lock it up. So, I took it.

Does anyone know anything about this rifle? Any tidbits of model or company history?

All I can offer is that it wasn't made by Sears, only sold by them. Just like their Craftsman tools, someone else makes them for Sears and puts the Sears name on them.

"...Made by Sears Roebuck and Co..." Sold, not made, by Sears Roebuck and Co. under their store brand name of J.C. Higgins. There never was a J.C. Higgins firearm manufacturer. A lot of department stores had firearms made for them with the store's brand name on the firearm. J.C. Higgins was Sears' brand name.
Your rifle is a close copy of a High Standard Model 30.
If you look for a serial number and can't find one, don't worry about it. Serial numbers were not required on .22's prior to 1968.

Sears offered 4 practically identical .22 autoloaders made by High Standard. The J.C.Higgin's models 28,29,30 and 31. There were minor differences in bolt and firing pin retaining pins.

It is really kind of neat to see one of these with the retractable sling still functional. I remember them from the true old Sears stores of my youth.

Yes, the sling still works fine. The rifle for the most part is 10% for the exception of needing a full clean-up and maybe to re-blue the barrel to make it pretty again. Thanks for the info.

I had an old single shot bolt .22 from sears . It wasnt much to look at , but , it was a tack driver with cheap factory ammo .

it appears to be either a Hi Standard or Savage/springfield, it looks like their
answer to the remmy 552 speedmaster. Especially if charging handle is on the left...
