I've never had a gun engraved. But I'm looking to get the sideplate of a Beretta 686 engraved. Luckily, the engraving is simple: a name and a date in script. I would like to get one sideplate done with the name and the other with the date. Does anyone have any idea where I can get this done? I definitely want to get something that is good quality but I want to keep the cost of the engraving under $150. Thanks in advance.

Find a Mom and Pop Jewelry store that does their own Machine engraving. Perhaps a range that has trophies engraved can recommend a Jewelry Store or Trophy shop that is discreet and gun friendly.
Hand Engravers area dying breed, all that I knew or worked with are dead. Far and few between, and expensive. Best to use a Factory recommended Engraver for the hand jobs.
For just name , date, presentations, machine engraving is fine.
price: did a Beretta 10 years ago, I charged about $25 back then, and that only because I made a 'special holder', fellow ended up having me do about a 10 of these for employee gifts for service awards.

Most towns even our small one have trophy shops. They all do engraving fairly cheap.

Most malls down here have a Thing's Remembered that do engraving. Of course, that requires walking through the mall with a shotgun in hand. Can you imagine the looks you'd get

You could always remove the barrel first.

S&W offers a service to laser engrave handguns.
It can be a pretty fancy scroll or as plain as you wish. I think having an entire j frame done is around $75

I do this type of thing all the time, I've owned a retail awards shop for 25 years, been engraving for 33 years. As mentioned above, machine (pantograph) engraving is what you need. Find a shop that has an experienced engraver, not just some sales clerk that also engraves. You may want to call around and find a shop that has a large machine (GTX Super or Universal). I personally would stay away from Things Remembered, the one here doesn't have a clue about how to engrave anything they don't sell.
I would probably charge about $25-$30 for the type of job your describing.

Michael Gouse has done a bunch of high quality work for my father. I don't know if he does small jobs, but it can't hurt to ask.

Glad you chimed in, I knew we had an experienced engraver amongst the members--had a mature moment and couldn't recall the name-sorry.
Old family owned Trophy Shops and Jlry stores --kinda dying out. Engravers, Jlrs, watchmakers (not parts changers) hard to find.
Used to get all the retirement shotguns to engrave for the local LEO Depts. Trophy shop and we would help each other out on large orders.
The gentleman whom owned the trophy shop became ill, his wife opened the shop and I did the Beretta's for his long time customer. Of course I didn't charge for this, $ went in their till. The way it was back then.
I'm guessing the 'clang' of Herme's type skittering to floor hasn't changed since I left the business? (inside joke)

Don't jinx me, I haven't dumped type on the floor for a coupla years.
Actually about 99% of my engraving is done by computers now, 4 times as fast and never needs a break. But I still do jewelry, guns, rifle barrels and any odd-shaped item on the old Hermes GTX Universal. Also, we have been doing laser engraving for the last 8 years.

Firearms Engraving Guild of America. I believe it is www.fega.com Ask about one in your area. For just a name, the previous posters have it right. Trophy or jewelry shops are the ticket. FEGA steered me to a guy that engraved a stainless Bearcat 22 for my granddaughter last christmas. He did a great job!
