Recently bought a a Rossi 92 lever gun, 20" round barrel, in 45 Colt. I want to change out the stock to the crescent style that Rossi offers on their octagon barrel models. I've read where others have swapped stocks with no issues. Rossi customer service says the recievers are different, different tangs. Is this true? Sounds stupid from a cost standpoint. Or are the customer service reps lacking in knowledge of their product?

stocks are hand fitted and numbered to the rifle, at least Win and Uberti number them I cannot remember if Rossi does theirs, anyway each tang is not that much different but you are dealing with two separate parts that get ground at different times probably by different people. It is possible that the stocks might interchange but I would bet against it. The newer Rossi's do not need the internals stoned as much as the older ones demanded so yours may just mate the parts with hand cycling while you watch tv and annoy the wife.

Thanks for the input. I figured there may be some minor hand fitting to do, not a big deal, I've done a few stocks, and he the skills to do it. Rossi customer service is saying the tangs are completely different from one model to the other. Doesn't make sense from a dollar standpoint.

I've done a little research on this in the past. I would like to have a synthetic on one of mine just for durability. I found a few instances where guys modified a 94 stock to fit. Either way it sounds like it involved a Dremel and epoxy. If you have both those things already and the skills to use them it might be worth it.

FYI, the description for the Marbles Tang sight that Steve's Guns sells for Rossi rifles says:

"The Correct Marbles Tang sight for Rossi 92 Octagon barrel Rifles
Also works for the Rossi 92 Round Barrel Carbines But Requires Drilling and tapping."

This suggests there's more difference than just possible manufacturing variation. Maybe it's just an extra screw hole on the octagonal rifles, but maybe there's more to it.

FWIW
