Found an old 'Ideal' (Lyman) loading manual online that has some great old loads...

http://www.castpics.net/LoadData/OM/IdealHandbook38.pdf

One in particular (actually two) caught my eye...It is a 'Cellar And Small Game Load' composed of
a 45gr .308" round ball, and low doses of Bullseye in the .30-30...

Just wondering if anyone had ever tried this, and if so how it worked accuracy-wise, etc...

The 2nd load I was wondering about is basically the same, but for the .35 Remington with a
72gr Round Ball @.358"...

.30-30 is on page 62...

.35 Rem is on page 84...

Also posting this at another site, so if I get info elsewhere, I will post it here also...

I have that manual also. Yes it will work but the rounds are not as accurate at long ranges. It is a good way to shoot a lot for cheap or when regular components are scarce. I loaded some up in several calibers. The best way to do it with some accuracy is to use a slightly larger ball and run it through a sizer and load it so the cylinder part will engage the rifleing. I use buckshot and do this for 32 CAL gallery loads with Trail Boss. Try it, I bet you will be surprised with the results.

I always wondered about loading lead round balls as bullets. Don't they lead the barrel due to their absence of lube?

I tumble lube them with LLA and have never had a problem with leading even when using pure lead balls, but velocity must be kept down. They make excellent small game/varmint loads.
