I'm thinking of trying to work up some indoor, 18-yard loads for the .30-30 so the kids can shoot it without all the recoil and stuff of a full charge. I have some 1960's era Norma 150 grain jsp which are kind of semi-round nose... and some 110 grain FMJ intended for the .30 Carbine. Can I use either of these bullets with "the load" or with the other "gallery" loads using around 7 grains of bullseye I've seen floating around recently? Where can I go to learn about light loads?

Also I've read that H4895 can be reduced up to 40% safely... is that 40% from suggested starting loads?

I'd rather use a light charge of unique, bullseye, or Red Dot rather than use up my limited stock of 4895 if possible.

I don't expect anyone to guarantee safety nor will I blame anyone for his/her data or opinions. I undertake this with full understanding that I am responsible. I'd like resources to read if possible.

I just read that old link to the Ed from Ed's red and he was shooting pulled M2 150 grain fmj in the .30-06 using 7 grains of bullseye if I remember correctly... would it be reasonable to assume that the .30-30 case should respond similarly? Most places that talk about "the load" or gallery type loads say that it should work in any "military sized" case of around .30 caliber. Any input welcome.

http://www.hensleygibbs.com/edharris/articles/The Load.htm

says "the load" works fine for jacketed bullets but also says they need to be in the "normal" weight range for the caliber. He also says that the case needs to be larger than the .30-40 Krag and have a normal working pressure of 40K PSI.

Does the .30-30 qualify for that? He also says that the .32-40 works fine with "the load.".... so that seems a bit contradictory to me unless I'm misunderstanding something.

thoughts?

2400 is another good one to try out. My ancient Lyman 41st shows 21.3gr 2400 as max (no starting load listed so subtract 10% initially) with a velocity of 2435fps and a 110gr jacketed bullet. Small bullet and low velocity will make it very comfortable.

In your previous thread I would have suggested using H4895 but now I think Trail Boss would be better for the your project. Hodgdon lists Trail Boss and a 160gr Cast Bullet in their normal 30-30 load data. The starting load will generate under 1000 fps and only 20,000 CUP.

Missouri Bullets sells a 165gr coated bullet in .309" that will be great for your use @ only $31 for 250.

If that is still too much for the young ones they also sell a 135gr coated bullet that im sure will work for you.

Good luck.

Any fast shotgun/pistol powder will work. You really only need to make sure the pressure is above 9,000 psi to get a good burn. 9-11,000 psi is what we strive for with shotgun powders in shotgun loading. Much less than that and you start to get inconsistent burn and in metallic loading, sooty cases. I've loaded as low as 6.5g Red Dot under a 113g cast bullet in .308 and averaged 1310 fps and 6.5g under a 200g cast bullet for an average MV of 1005 fps (subsonic). You'll get higher pressures and slightly higher velocities in a 30-30 case, but way below max pressures and still in the good burn region of the powder.

These are 50 yard shots, so at 18 yards, you should be seeing a single hole with just about any load. Very fun "plinking load" with almost no recoil and very little noise.

I've used H4895 downloaded enough to work with plated Xtreme 150gn bullets. In my 20" rifle, a charge of 22.5gn gave ~ 1500fps. I tested loads starting with 20.5gn charge, but the lower velocities were not as accurate.

The 40% they quote is a reduction from max listed charge.

Thank you. Does 4895 burn completely at these reduced charges? I'm thinking of 4227 or blue dot which rain down unburned granules on me.

I found on mine there is a huge difference from full power ammo to low power stuff even at 25m.
So look out for that. From one to the other there is about a 4 inch at 25m elevation difference for me.
I was using 7gr of unique on 124ge .311 bullets.

This really isn't about jacketed bullets in "the load" anymore but I shot my first few 170 grain laser cast .30-30 loads over 7.2-7.5 grains Unique (that's as consistent as I could get my PAD to throw with the universal rifle charge die) and they work fine. This load is actually published in Lyman manual (7.0 grains is starting) so I figured it would work. Hits about 6 inches below POA but the group was nice and small (offhand). May try a bit more powder but likely not much more.

I ordered the Lee universal flare die to help mitigate lead shaving since the rifle charge die doesn't flare at all.

I did not notice unburned powder, but I was not really looking for it, either.

5744 can also be downloaded, and I have noticed lots of unburned granules with that. (in 460 S&W).

I shot 123 gr cast bullet with H4895 reduced load in 7.62x39 and saw unburned powder at 80%, very noticeable at 22 gr H4895 (75%) while 7.62x39 max load is 29 gr in Hodgdon load data for 125 gr SPR SP. Trail Boss is good! 700X is also good just be careful on double load!
