Dave, if this is in the wrong forum, please feel free to move it - I figured I'd get better exposure here.

I went back to the pawnshop where I bought my Frankenstein on Tuesday, to look for extra barrels. I wanted either a short barrel for HD use, or one I could cut down. As it happened, they had a minty-condition 30" full-choke Wingmaster barrel, looking almost factory-new, which I picked up for a measly $70. It's a plain barrel, no vent rib, bead sight, 2¾" chamber.

I could cut this barrel down, but I know that some of you are looking for longer Wingmaster barrels for use in clay games. That being the case, if any of you would like to have this barrel, and have something shorter in the way of a Wingmaster barrel to swap, PM me and we'll see what we can do. I need the 20" IC barrels with either bead sight or rifle sights (the latter preferred, but a bead will do in a pinch), or failing that, another Wingmaster barrel I can cut down. Must be Wingmaster - not Express. Condition should be as good as possible, given that what I've got is pretty much factory-mint.

Let me know.

Don't need it, but I do have a barrel sitting around you might want. I was going to use it for a project, but picked up a 26" Remchoked barrel instead.

It's about 26" long, vent rib and marked Full. Previous owner had cut it off right behind the choke, it's cylinder bore, glossy finish and rustless. There is a small ding on the rib. Bead sight. Good candidate for further bobbing.

I have very little in it. Call me if you're interested.

Thanks, Dave, I'm definitely interested. It's a bit late tonight (you're an hour ahead of me) but I'll call tomorrow. Many thanks.

Darn, I wish there were a place to post 870 barrel swaps. I have a 28 incn rem choke w/ vent rib inch 3 1/2 super I would love to swap for a 26 or even 24 inch 3 1/5.

Whats the differance?

besides sighting, what advantage does the vent on the barrel give over one that does have it? I am in the market for a full choke barrel, but happen to also be ignorant in every other aspect of what I need in that barrel...

The vent rib simply gives a flat sighting plane for those who prefer it. The round barrel is no less accurate: it just has a round sighting plane. Quite frankly, I don't care which barrel I have on an 870, as I'm equally accurate with either type. It's just a personal preference thing. (The reason I ended up with a 28" vent-rib barrel on my new 870 is simply that it was in the best condition, inside and out, of the three barrels I inspected closely. If a non-vent-rib barrel had been in better shape, I'd have chosen that one.)

I've heard some folks claim that when the barrel gets very hot, the "shimmer" of heat in the air over the barrel makes aiming more difficult, and the vent-rib helps avoid this by offering a cooler sighting surface. I've never yet found a shotgun barrel to get so hot that the heat "haze" has been a factor in sighting, so I don't agree with this perception. Besides, you don't aim a sporting shotgun, you point it - so the question is moot as far as I'm concerned.

As for the 30" Full barrel, everyone should have one.
I have two that came with two of my 870's. One w/ 2 3/4" and other w/ 3" chamber. I initially used the 2 3/4" for Trap but then bought a 30" RemChoke LC barrel. At this point both are spares but I can't seem to part with them. Three 870's, six barrels, that's about right :)

Sorry, IDriveB5, but I've already spoken for it. However, put a "Want To Buy" ad in our For Sale - Long Gun forum, and you might find one. Also, check out pawn shops, like I do: sometimes they have spare barrels for pretty good prices.

B5, despair not. There's other barrels around. I may part with Frankenstein's "Original" barrel. I had it cut down about a year before Remington brought out a turkey barrel.

It's an Express barrel, 3" chamber, cut to a nominal 21". Vent rib, of course.

It's threaded for the old .795" X 44 TPI Truchoke, and it has Skeet, Mod, Full, Turkey and rifled choke tubes with it. Colonial, Hastings and Carlson's carry other tubes for it.

The cone has been lengthened by a good smith. It groups KO 1 oz Brennekes inside 2.5" at 50 yards when I hold my mouth right.

Once I ship Preacher a barrel, I'll still have 9 here. This fills no unique purpose.

Make me an offer....
