The only difference between the normal TAC mini-14 and the ATI is the stock. Both are much more accuarate then the older minis, my long barreled mini is an honest 1.5" gun with pretty much any decent factory ammo or handload. Surplus or wolf ammo ive shot hasnt been so hot. Ive read a number of reports that the shorter barreled minis show better accuracy in general (so much so that its comon to shorten full length minis, tho part of that might be a recrowning job).

The minis inherent reliability is very good, the real issue are the aftermarket magazines. I have a John masen 10rnd, the stock 5, and a tapco gen 1 30. The john masen and the stock work flawlessly, the tapco has major issues. Ive heard of issues with steel cased ammo, but from my experience mine has run it just fine. Wolf is a little on the weak side, and i swear it causes rust and crud to build up faster then any of the other rounds ive shot....it could just be me, but i only ran a couple hundred rounds thru my stainless mini about a week ago, and when i took it apart last night there was rust and crud all over the oprod, gastube, and barrel.

The mini is not really "Cleaner" then the AR, but it puts the crap in a different place, youll end up with a bunch of powder fouling around the op rod, gas tube, and in the forend of the stock. The AR will usually have a dirtier action, tho i call shins on AR DI systems being unreliable. Take a look over at perfectunion, they have probably the best group of mini fans around, lotsa good info. One thing to remember with the mini is its seriously over gassed, and uses a mechanical ejector, it will toss cases all over the place. Mine had, before i changed out the gas tube bushing, a nasty habit of finding the only bush nearby and tossing all my cases into it.

There are some reviews of the gen 2s, they sound like they maybe better. Ruger has 20-30s available, for what its worth id stick with them.

I have the Mini-14 with the ATI stock. It is an excellent rifle, much more accurate than older models. The reliability and durability is above and beyond the norm, I have 1000 rounds through mine with no failures. Very fun to shoot. Do not by mags from any company other than Ruger, no one can do it well enough to justify saving a few bucks. If you shop around online you will find some decent prices on the 20 and 30rd mags from Ruger.I have a FAB T-Pod G2 and a Vortex SPARC on mine. I will be adding ATI's aluminum upgrade package soon.

(Sorry about the poor picture, all I had with me was my phone)

"The gas operating system is not like the AR 15, there is no gas flow and residue directed into the gun's bolt through a long gas pipe. A small volume of cartridge generated gas, metered by the gas block, flows through a stub gas pipe and into the cylindrical cavity at the front of the slide assembly..."

To sum it all up, as far as the gas system on the mini-14 goes, it was designed to be clean AND reliable. It does both very well.

No, just different. Either when working properly should provide good service. A properly set up ARs system might have tighter tolerances. Its also is easier to work on the first time. The Mini has looser tolerances and more moving mass, so in theory it can overcome gunk and fouling better. I wouldnt know as i never let my gun get very dirty.
