Hi. I just purchased my first new Sig Its a stainless 229. I have only owned one other Sig, a 239 in .40S&W, which I regretably traded for something else. I know that many people feel that "break in" is not needed. Any thoughs from Sig owners? Also for carry, any ammo recomendations? I know that most premium factory ammo is a good choice, but is there any thing that you have found your 229 likes more than most. Also, any problems or little things that I should watch out for.

Thanks for any input.
Fred

I have a couple 229's now. Both .40's. I've never had one that I had to break-in. They're pretty much good to go, right out of the box. I can't think of any significant problems that you need to watch out for. Routinely maintain your weapon, and it will serve you well. My 229's will feed any type of ammo I choose to feed it, but I have found that they are most accurate with 155 gr Hornady TAP and 155 gr Winchester Ranger. Enjoy your Sig.

I've never had any problems, ammo related or otherwise, with my 229.

I don't think a break in period is needed however I always shoot at least 200 rounds through any gun I intend to carry (actually even the ones I don't intend to carry) :D just to establish confidence in that particular gun.

I do have one "major-name, highly thought of, you pay for quality" gun that couldn't fire 3 rounds without an FTE when it was new that reinforced my "don't trust anything till you try it out" mentality. It runs fine now, after a trip back to the factory, but it'll probably never be my carry gun. BTW, it is NOT a SIG!

2 of them here, one in 9mm and 1 with both the.40S&W and the .357Sig bbls.

I have literally never had a failure in these 2 guns, no matter what I have feed them. Wolf, WWB, S&B, Double Tap, Remington Golden Sabre, Speer Gold dot, etc. They have been 100% from day one.

These guns are service guns, and should NOT be picky. If the one you have is, have it looked at -- normally they will run all day long with no issues.

I love Double Tap ammo for carry. Good stuff.

Not Picky

Its not that its picky, but I know that when it comes to premium ammo, sometimes a gun will prefer one load over some others, even though it will shoot all reliably. For instance, my USP 45 will eat any thing that i can throw at it, but it likes the Federal 230 hydrashocks and 200 Hornady TAP's the best as far as accuracy is concerned. It prints 230 Winchester about 2" high, of course, could just be the loose nut behind the trigger.

I have a 229 that originally came in 40 S&W. Since that time I've bought a factory 357 Sig bbl and a Bar-Sto 9mm bbl for it. The same mags can be used for all three calibers. It's probably one of my most versitle handguns. I've used all kinds of ammo with all three bbls and it's functioned fine. I've had one or two FTF with 9mm, but it was during the first 100 rounds. I equate it to the after market bbl getting used to my 229. After that though, no problems what so ever.

As to breaking it in. I didn't when I bought mine. All three bbls have had several thousand rounds go through them and I see no accuracy problems at all.

Good luck with yours.

i have a 229 also and it has been able to handle everything so far :) no problems at all :) and as far as i can tell.. there was no break in period required.. was pretty much ready to go after the original cleaning/lube that they recommend :)

I have 2 Sig 229s and recommend that you use a grease, not an oil to lube the rails or you will eventually have galling. Rig +P is a good one and it's only about $7.00 a jar, which will last you forever.

Other than that, great gun, right out of the box.

My 229 DAK will shoot any ammo you throw at it. I have never had a single failure my Sig EVER.

My 229 is my favorite and I have had total belief in SIG products.... to my utter astonishment, it had a FTE last time at the range. First EVER malfunction of any kind, with any ammo, in over 10 yrs. Still wondering why. Was shooting Winchester cheapo FMC, 100/$10 at Wallyworld, but still, that's not bad ammo.

I have a .357 SIG barrel and have shot a lot of it in the past. Bought a Wolff spring for that chambering but never put it in. Could shooting .357 SIG have messed up my gun's extractor? Dunno but doubt it.

Freddymac, don't even let this deter you- SIGS are the best.

Testify! :D

Sig 229 .40 with the same jar of Rig +P for ten years (used only 1/3 so far).
That stuff is great, and it's $4.29 a jar on MidwayUSA.com.

Never had a single issue with my Sig. Out of all my guns, it has the smoothest and most consistent trigger. After firing over 1400 rounds over a weekend, the gun was still perfect. It was still cycling at full speed. Over that weekend, an XD lost it's sight and a certain .45 ACP kept having FTE's. My Sig had no problems.:D
