Anyone running steel in a 7.62x39 AR?

Member of the family's getting one of these and the only caveat offered by the previous owner is some difficulty getting continuous feeding with steel-case ammo.

Does polymer-coated or lacquer-coated make an improvement in this instance or is brass pretty much the only reliable case type to make it run without stop?(rifle does come with Cproducts mags...)

I've only shot brass cased Yugoslav in mine ... No problems with it tho

Your problems with a 7.62x39 will be magazines. Only FMJ ammo feeds 100% in most of my mags. JHP and SP will usually feed a full mag but feed failures are common enough to keep it a range toy only.

Using Wolf extra power AK mags springs helps a lot.

Colt carbine upper/RRA lower runs perfectly so far with anything I have...Golden Tiger, Tula, Wolf MC HPs, S&B, Fiocchi, WWB, PMC, Hornady Vmax, and SP reloads.

I use 10 and 30 round ASC mags. ASC said in an email they should be making 20 rounders soon...

my brother shoots mainly brass cased out of his. he snapped an extractor while shooting wolf steel so he's been kindof leery since though to be fair, his is a blackthorn kit so it might have just been a shoddy extractor to begin with.

as far as Cprod mags goes, the springs in them are garbage, my brother had serious issues until he bought stronger mag springs(don't recall the make) and now his works just fine with feeding.

I have never got a Cprod to work in any caliber, they are just junk as far as I'm concerned.

All the lacquered or polymer coated steel-cased 7.62x39 ammo I've tried has worked the same for me. One of my favorite loads is Hornady's (poly coated steel) 7.62x39 Vmax ammo. Hmmm...I have a 100yd target around here somewhere...

The only ammo I use in my 762X39 AR is steel case. I have a modified firing pin that is completely reliable with steel case ammo but can possibly over penetrate the primer on hand loads or commercial brass case ammo.

For hog hunting, I pull the fmj bullets from my Barnal steel case ammo and replace them with a Winchester 123gr power point bullet.

I use the ASC, C products, or AR Stoner (same mags) 10 round mags in my gun. I have no problem with reliability.

I am very happy with the performance of steel case ammo in my rifle.

ive shot a bunch of wolf in my bushmaser 762x39 and it runs just fine as long as you clean it a bit more regularly. It is some dirty ammo though and will gum things comparitively quickly.

I find the poly works, but the lacquer gets gummy over time.

You may or may not have seen this already.
Personally I think it's an issue with Plastic Mags... Even my AK does not like them. AR's in 7.62X39mm I don't think would be much better IMO.

The only issue i've run into is with the hard primers on the Wolf ammo; some of them (depends on the batch i think) take two strikes to go off. I've had no problems with the brass washed steel cased Bears and the other animals in 7.62x39

And Cproducts mags have been working fine for me. C products went under and is now ASC. Their 30 rounders look a bit goofy, but they work. I stay away from plastic mags in general.

In my experience, an ASC/CProducts magazine + Wolff XtraPower AK magazine spring + M4 barrel extension cuts + oring extractor upgrade + additional firing pin protrusion (via modified bolt tail or firing pin collar) = reliable 7.62x39 AR15 using ComBloc ammo. Nothing short of this combination of details has proven reliable across a half dozen that I've built and run. Oh, and some barrels have tight chambers and will simply not give reliable extraction no matter what you to the extractor.

Lacquer feeds better than polymer.
