I am trying to get started loading my own #4 buckshot and have a good supply of the new Winchester AA HS hulls. I've read some things about some wads not fitting right in these hulls so wanted to check if anyone had tried these loads from Hodgdon...

Lead Buckshot 12 27-#4 LEAD BUCKSHOT Universal Win. 209 WAA12R 23.6 10,400 PSI 1250
Lead Buckshot 12 27-#4 LEAD BUCKSHOT HS-6 Win. 209 WAA12R 30 9,000 PSI 1250
Lead Buckshot 12 27-#4 LEAD BUCKSHOT HS-6 Win. 209 WAA12R 32 10,000 PSI 1300

Also anyone have a good load for #4 buck in my hulls. I have plenty of AA12 wads on hand but I'm gonna have to order the WAA12R's for the loads above. This is my first attempt at reloading shotshells so the more info the better. As always THANKS!!!

Cypress, I'm not up-to-speed on the new AA HS hull. But from what I can gather, it's no longer a tapered case. The old AA WAS a tapered case, one piece, being smaller towards the bottom. Therefore the wads also had to be tapered, otherwise they would NOT go all the way down on top of the powder charge.

If you use a tapered wad in a straight sided, non tapered hull, you'll get a loose fit between the wad over-powder section, or another word for it is the gas seal portion. Powder will then leak around,(get in front of), the gas seal, it does no good there, in fact it COULD be a bad thing if it ignites in front of the gas seal.

If they're a straight hull, then you must use a wad similar to the wads offered by Federal. See if you can find load data for something like the 12-S0 wad. It has the capacity for large pellets like #4 buck.

I hear the AA red wad is no longer made. Reason is; it's a special wad meant for heavy "baby" magnum loads in high base 2-¾" field loads. Like 1-½ ounces of #5 LEAD shot. Since the use of those loads was mainly waterfowl, you can't use lead anymore.

I'll take a look at my info/data to see if I can determine a load for you. BRB.

All I can find is data for the AA, nothing specific for the HS hull. I found one reference on one forum that it IS tapered, so you should be safe loading those with the AA-12R wad, IF you can find any.

Winchester says that all data for the old AA hulls is safe with the new ones. Claybuster makes the old AA12R wad now and I can get them through a couple of online sources. I just didn't want to end up with a bunch of useless wads. Some chatter online is saying that the wads stop when they hit the rim of the uh..... "base wad" I haven't got all the terms down yet. Thanks for checking it out for me snuffy!

243--I'll be casting my own #4 buckshot with my brand new handy dandy LEE mould. They aren't all round but with 27 of 'em in there I'm bound to hit SOMETHING. Right???

Thanks for the help so far guys.
