Anyone use a 308/7.62 suppressor on both 7.62 (308) and 5.56?

Thinking of going cheap and getting one suppressor for both my AR15 and AR10 style rifles. I have heard of folks using the 308 can on their 5.56 AR15 with good results.

This option would be great especially with the use of QD flash suppressors. That way I would only have to pay one tax and get a suppressor I could use on two calibers.

Thats what I'm planning on doing. I asked YHM what the results are using their 7.62 phantom on a 5.56 and they said it's within a couple decibels of their 5.56 can. Figure I can use it on the .308s, 5.56s and 7.62x39.

over time, i've come to the point that i never use the suppressors on my carbines anymore. it was interesting to play around with, but in the end, it's not worth the weight or heat, gas in the face and the giant PITA removing them after a few hundred rounds.

otoh, all my precision guns have suppressors and the only time i shoot without them is with the stupid NRA makes me remove them for one of their matches.

so, i'd suggest not even worrying about the 5.56

Thanks Taliv. The whole point in me wanting a can is my wife is very noise sensitive even with earpros on. She won't shoot with me again until I figure out a way to reduce the decibels.

I'll assume you mean surefire earpros, I have a few sets and though they are good for what they are they are not in line with a high quality set of muffs. I recommend a set of high quality muffs for her to wear over the earpros.

Yes, I do all the time. I only own one suppressor and its in 7.62. I use it on my AR15s, My Ruger 10-22, My Walther P22, my FN SPR .308 and AR10 (before I sold it) and my AKs and romainian PSL. It works well on my .22, .223/5.56, and all .30 cal guns. All of my guns are either threaded 5/8x24 for the suppressor or I use thread adapters for 1/2x28 and AKs

A suppressor will also reduce felt recoil, in turn reducing percieved decibles....maybe? Makes a gun a little lighter in the shoulder and therefore more comfortable for new shooters.

mags, if you can, i'd recommend trying one before you sink a lot of money into it.

doubling up by using ear plugs and muffs may be an option. I do this when shooting magnums with brakes.

also, make sure the muffs fit her and are worn properly. if she has something like glasses that are breaking the seal around her ears, that might be the problem.

wouldnt the greater diameter of the baffles make the can less efficent for the 5.56 and 22? i thought that the baffles had to be very close to the bullet diameter to work well. I was thinking about doing the same thing but wasnt sure if it would work.
pat

^ yes but it still reduces the volume quite a bit. I was told a .308 can on a 5.56 is around 2db more than a dedicated 5.56 can (but you save the $1k or so on another can and tax)

If you're going the one can route, look into a titanium can. It's pricier than a stainless steel, but it's a one time investment. The major difference between the .308 and .223 will be weight. The longer your bbl, the greater that weight will become a factor, in carry comfort, maneuverability, and POI shift.

I have used my 7.62SD on a 223 before. The mount is identical to the M4 1000 mount. It will also fit on the M4 2000 mount but the finer teeth make it less secure. It weighs more than the other two and is not as quite.

It might be less efficient (efficiency is result per unit input), but it's bigger, so the end result is close to the same.
