Hello:

I was wondering if anyone has experience with any of the new biometric (fingerprint) handgun safes (like two gun safes)?

Here's my problem. I have two young children (ages 5 and 8). Therefore, if my gun is not on me (in a holster, my hand, a pocket, etc. - it's in a safe). Although both kids are very well behaved and disciplined - I will not leave a gun on or in a nightstand while I'm sleeping.

Proposed Solution:

I was thinking about purchasing one of those small handgun safes to rest on my nightstand. I've looked at several but I'm sort of a heavy sleeper so I'm not sure I would be able to unlock (or punch in a code) quick enough should the need arise (specially in a waking state of mind).

This leads me to the biometric safes - where you only need to put your finger on a reader (using fingerprints) and the door pops open.

The only problem is that I haven't found anyone else that uses them to offer a little feedback.....

Any thoughts?

Saw one at a gunshow and I liked the concept, but unfortunetly I spent my cash on ammo and magazines.

If you're only using it to keep the kids away, you should be fine.

If you think you'll need to get into it in an emergency, I'd look at other options. The electronics in these types of safes are not reliable enough to trust your life to it. Biometric locks that are reliable enough cost in the four figure range. You won't see any of those on handgun safes.

I'd suggest any manufacturer that uses a simplex 5 push button lock. It's a proven design, reliable, easy to use, and doesn't need power.

I've had the same thought. I've had my eye on the biometric that Cabela's has carried for a couple of years...price still hasn't come down by much. It's on sale for $299.99 right now. If I didn't live alone I could probably justify the purchase. I would trust my life with a biometric reader, the technology is established.
