Anyone using a revolver for NRA Bullseye?

The only people I knew who talked about using revolvers for NRA Bullseye were all doing that back in the 1960s.

They used them for the centerfire portion of the match. The guns had special hammers that required very little movement to cock.

My bullseye knowledge is at least ten years out of date, but when I participated in the sport, the vast majority of people simply shot their .45 semi-auto pistol for both the centerfire and .45 courses of fire.

I recall seeing the occasional Smith and Wesson Model 52, and at some indoor matches a Walther GSP in .32 S&W Long would show up, but both of those were remarkable rarities than anything like a norm.

Starting at 59 years old I don't expect to progress too much. Doing this for fun mainly. I don't have any revolvers in my cabinet currently and am looking for an excuse :)

Some are shooting the center fire match with the revolver on days that there are official points for the Distinguished Revolver Badge for warm-ups.

You see them more and more. I use a SW Model 27 ( N frame ) as I found the SW Model 14 ( K frame) a tad small in the hand.

I used to use a revolver in Centerfire many years ago, but I got a Smith 52 in 1987, and I've been using that ever since.

Recently, I got an old Officers Model to use for the Distinguished Revolver matches, so I'll be shooting a little bullseye w/revolver soon.

Your choices are a 38 revolver for centerfire, or a 45 ACP revolver for both CF and 45. Don't mess with 45 Long Colt. With the ACP, you can use moon clips preloaded the night before. Also, you could use a 22 revolver in the 22 portion.

The main thing is you need to be able to cock the gun one-handed, aim, shoot, and repeat. 5 times in 10 seconds.

Good luck!

The biggest drawback of a wheel gun is the range officers may not give enough time to reload for timed & rapid. When ask " is the line loaded" you got to speak up. "NO" After that, a good range officer will keep an eye on you & allow you a little extra time. But with 50 shooters on the line, it may not happen.

For Hat...Thanks. Shameless request for more.

'The Last Word' was a heck of great idea. There was more than one 'The Last Word' that was written by Mr. Clark. I have tried to find reprints of those articles or the mags where they appeared. Not any success yet.

PM follows.

Thanks for the article "The Last Word". I love reading things from old shooters back in "the day". I had zoom in with my PC but it was readable (couldn't find it with a quick google).

I am looking forward to my Ruger NMBH
