Anything pocketable in a .40?

Isn't a 9mm +P approaching the power level of the .40 S&W?

I would stick with a good micro nine that takes +P loads.

Personally I like the S&W M&P compact in 9mm.

Have you looked at the Springfield Armory XD40 sub-compact (3" barrel)? I have strongly considered this gun for my next CCW. Actually, the only other weapon I am considering (for CC) is a Ruger GP100, stainless .357 Mag w/3" barrel.

A friend of mine has the XD9 sub-compact and swears by it. Accurate, durable, reliable and very easy to conceal (all while maintaining good capacity). Not to mention, excellent CS. The only XD I currently own is the .45 ACP variant. I love it. Yes, its not as "comfortable" as my P220, but for the price, quality (and capacity), IMHO it cant be beat. I imagine the XD40 would be the same.

It may be "approaching," but IMHO it somewhat misses the mark. Personally, Im of the mind that one should not have to rely on going the "+P" route in order to have a "superior" or "equal" round. I say stick with the .40 unless max capacity is your thing. Besides, at least for now, it seems as if .40 S&W ammo can be found in abundance (HD loads or "target" loads). Yes, its more expensive than 9mm ammo. But, this means nothing when the ammo you seek becomes far too difficult to acquire.

To the OP-

Also, keep in mind that many (if not all) aluminum framed handguns (such as Sig Sauer) do not fare well with extensive use of +P ammunition (should you desire to use such ammo). This is another reason why I am strongly considering the XD40, given its polymer frame. Hence, such a weapon gives you a bit more "options" if need be, IMHO. Just something to think about when shopping around for your next CCW.

This may have already been mentioned as I skimmed the responses, but Charter Arms (the last I heard) had a .40S&W snubbie coming to the market soon. That might work.

was just on the the charter arms website- in the upper left it says they are bringing out their rimless revolvers in early 2010-when they say rimless i take it to mean for 40 cal 9mm & 45

+P rounds lose almost any advantage when fired from very short barrels (for a pocket pistol 3" or less)...and your muzzle flash increases significantly.

In a pocketable piece I would not go bigger than 9 mm.....I carry a Kel Tec P-11.

The XD Subcompact comes in .40. But it's kinda fat.

I would advise against the XD SC if you want to pocket carry, it is not SC. My wife has one and it is a great gun but it is NOT a pocket gun.

I pocket carry a KAHR PM45 everyday. I have had good luck with mine. KAHR offers several guns in .40 most of which would be pocketable with carpenter pants or such.

This is why they make Gold Dot short barrel, which I (personally) recommend for larger caliber pocket guns.

I believe the Kahr PM40 is a good choice. I carry a PM9 from time to time, and it has never let me down at the range. I'd bet my life on it, if I "HAD" too, but would prefer the PM40. Once I find one, it's joining the family.

About the smallest I would go is the S&W Shorty 40. I think there ws also a single stack version (4014??). There was also a CS40.

Interesting...and here I thought +P rounds helped make up for the "shortcomings" (muzzle flash aside) related to barrels which are shorter in length when it comes to bullet expansion within typical HD ranges. Would this not be considered the MAIN advantage?

Oh...and for those who dismissed the XD40 SC, yes...its a bit larger than say, a Kahr, but it does offer more rounds (if thats of any concern). Regardless, even with my relatively small stature, I have had no problem pocketing my friends XD.

I know it's not a .40, but would you guys say that the G36 is pocketable? How would this rate with the Kahr PM45?

CZ Rami in .40 S&W , slightly smaller than the .45acp Kimber Ultra Ten II, that I carry in my pocket daily. If I find my pocket gun starting to "print" I just stick a wad of cash in front of the gun in my pocket. That fixes everything and I have been doing it for 15 years.
