Anything wrong with a 300 fireball upper?

So i have an extra Anvil Arms lower around here asking me to populate it with something. Currently I have a M4gery sporting an Eotech and a .40 xd. I am saving the funds for a fal or ar-10 but in the mean time I would like a new upper to play with.

I reload both 40 and 223.

So here is the question why not the 300 fireball? From what i read and of course i could be way off base, it can pack as much puch as a 30-30. I can reform my 223 brass and use 308 pills that i will eventually use anyway when i get the fal or ar10. While i understand that it is basically the 300 whisper and designed to go subsonic i am looking to use it for strictly supersonic applications. Is there a better choice? Again this is a fun gun that may take a hog or two and unlikely to ever attempt a shot over 300 yards. Is there a better choice in an upper?

Much thanks

if all fits with ar 15 specs, and uses all ar 15 type parts, without a bunch of parts or mag changes, i would be all over it. I think the 45 bushmaster is this way, so is a 6x45, and I think a grendel as well. But also remember , remmy makes an upper in 30 ar, which uses all ar 15 parts, except bbl and bolt. it fires a 125 grainer .308 bullet at about 2800 fps, and not enough pressure, to have to upgrade to heavier, bigger parts.
that means remmy is def making 30 ar rounds out there somewhere.

300 fireball is a 300 whisper (whisper being the non-trademark name). Forming 5.56 brass to the correct neck will result in a thinner shell casing which some argue is a bit dangerous but I do not see an issue as long as you use mil-spec casings to begin with as they are thicker.

My next (and probably final) AR project will be a 300 whisper. Something about shooting a 300 gr. bullet through a suppressor making no more noise than an air rifle 'sounds like fun'.

Best 300 whisper you can get is a Noveske 7.62 barrel on your favorite flavor of upper receiver. Or if you were really special (and had a lot of money) wait for Noveske to make a small batch of them and buy the complete upper. But really it does not matter.... the barrel is all you really need to have one of "the most accurate" 300 whispers.

Good luck

:)

While the whisper was intended for a subsonic cartridge, as you said, it equals the 30-30 and 7.62x39 supersonic. I really want one, as they use the same mags, bolt, and everything but barrel. And it would be fun to suppress and have a quiet "play" gun, and hog hunting if the need arises...

I am looking at the very same thing and agree with your thinking. Seems like the next best upper after my 6.5 Grendel.:D

alright so it seems my logic isnt far off base. I guess i will hurry up and order a del-ton and start waiting my 3 months :(

Have you built one yet? Would a piston design upper be good w/ this cartridge since it seems the direct gas tubes are made w/ an adjustable bleed off valve? I was thinking that some piston arrangements have the different positions like and off for suppressed fire. I am not too knowledgeable about either but the gas ones have something to do w/ placement of the gas block too? that may affect the use of heavier bullets or something, so cycling may or may not work w/ different loads?
