I want a good base model "tactical"scope. Sturdy and simple is what's needed. I am considering the buhsnell 3200 10x mil dot, as it has a decent reputation for repeatability in adjustments. I like that it is a fixed power, with mil dots, but it has a factory set parallax zero of 100 yds. I plan to shoot anywhere from 25 yds to 600+ yds.
Is this going to prevent me from shooting well at longer ranges? I am aware that the military used non AO scopes for a long time. Will the scope remain in clear focus at longer range?
I value any feedback you may have.

What is your definition of tactical? In my exp. parallax is really likely to skew groups, not skew putting rounds into a potential target.

I would think your primary concerns would be robustness, clarity, and features such as bullet drop/mil dot estimation.

Now I am a Low Speed High Drag kind of guy who wants nothing more then to plug paper and clay so take this for what it is worth.

It needs to have repeatable adjustments, and be able to engage targets at various ranges. Inexpensive scopes are known for having innacurate elevation and windage adjustments. I dont mind simplicity, and I realize an AO in an inexpensive scope may throw off its zero.
Then again 100 yds is where Im likley to shoot groups anyway.

My personal opinion, and please be aware that I am so far from your below average DELTASEALLEOSWATOPERATOR that it isn't even funny, is that a good red dot will do you for any practical engagement you are ever likely to encounter a decent scope is just gravy on top of that.

Now I am speakng from likely civillian engagements not going to war in the sandbox.

The purpose of the setup im building is to teach me the fundamentals of long range shooting. I do not wish to play in the sandbox, I also do not wish to play smooth operator at close range with a red dot.
Now hitting steel squares at what ive calculated to be 800 meters, in a 15mph wind-that would be fun.

Well hell that being said then I say get an AO scope as it gives you more versatility.

I was not mocking you in any way. I was just trying to get a feel for what tactical meant to you. There are folks going over to the sandbox who post here, as well as LEO SWAT or snipers etc.

Tactical means different things for different folks.

Once again, no disrespect meant and I am about as Low Speed High Drag as there is.

Guess you saw the rearraging the rifles thread. I don' t know about tasteful but It serves my fun needs amirably..

That handgun collection is almost as eclectic.

Back to the question at hand.

I seem to be more likely to by AO scopes with my .22s that I shoot groups with. As far as what could be termed as "tactical" firearms I usually just buy higher end scopes, not AO.

I realize this doesn't help but it has done well for me.

As an aside that Army of Darkness Poster gets more comments then any gun I have ever posted. "Good.....Bad.....I'm the one with the gun." :D
