Apartment broken into, handguns stolen

It is possible that the men who came by earlier and saw the handguns were responsible so I should not have kept them out like that.

Ya think?

F.S. 790.173(1)). In fact, a person faces up to sixty days in jail and/or a fine of up to $1000 dollars if convicted for failure to properly secure or store a firearm or is accessed by a minor (F.S.790.174). Leaving a weapon unattended in plain view within the house is not properly secured.

This law is aimed at keeping minors away from your guns not keeping your guns from being stolen maybe you should reread it

While I don't condemn you for your choice of having the guns out in your house, your door, shouldn't have been opened. The guns, should have then been taken with you or locked up in a safe, and you shouldn't have left for the night. You were being watched. They saw your carelessness.
Anyway, now that we have learned a valuable lesson, go tell the cops, change your door and get a door block for when you are home. Not sure it will matter anymore since they are armed, but I would be way more careful. I don't even let the roommate see mine, cause its none of his business.

Personally I have forgotten to lock up the gun when I have to leave and can't take it to even the car. I dread it to death, because hidden is not locked up. We have all forgotten right? Anyway, just get a safe, and be less obvious.

I tend to bury my guns. Sometimes people comes in for appointments like bugs and such. They dont get to go into those rooms if at all.

I used to be a apartment dweller and honestly for the hassle and money involved it's much easier to buy a house and pay it off with a bit of land and get away from all that random troubles in a apartment complex.

Those two who eyeballed the place and talked messy are suspects to me.

The rest of it previous posters have already covered and I have little left to contribute.

Hide your firearms. Use a gun safe if you have one. None should be in plain view ever other than the one in your hand.

Maybe you could conveniently let your door open again and see what happens? Do the same two show up?

Report the incident to the police. Keep an eye out for the two that paid you a visit. There is little you can do other than be smarter in the future.

IN REMORSE - " My house has been invaded 10 times in 4 years. They haven't taken my guns, in plain view, but vandalized and put chemicals in my food. "

Huh??

Where do you live??

I'd have either moved after about the second burglary (home invasion???), or there'd have been some "slow walkin' and soft singin'" by the surviving family members of the thugs invading my home.

L.W.

you have to file a report. If these guns are used to kill a cop they will come knocking on your door and you want to make sure you have the i's dotted.

I am a crim defense attorney and every time a gun is used in a crime they run the history and it shows buyer and etc.

Agree with everyone you have to keep your stuff locked down and don't let strangers in your home. Crime is going REALLY start creeping up with the problems with the economy.

And it is probably someone who has been in your house or knows your gun inventory.

I remember the scene form Full Metal Jacket where the DI is explaining that if it wasn't for people leaving their foot locker unlocked we would not have thieves ......

the point is when you get careless is when BAD STUFF HAPPENS

How much time elapsed before you notified the police after discovering the break in?

Did you actually take the time to post this topic before notifying the police?

You have a damaged door / door frame -- doesn't that mean anything to you?

Security deposit?

I call BS on the "crim defense attorney"

What if I bought my guns FTF at a garage sale? What would "running the history" show then?

It would show the name and address of the person who sold it to you. Just because it is a lead doesnt mean that anything will come of it. But it will lead back to the original owner and a little more scrutiny until another aliby is confirmed.

Where in DFW and what apartment complex?

You're testing him, right?

DD

Testing what? Just curiosity. He actually lives less than 3 miles from me, so it hits close to home for me.

I sincerely hope he gets his property back, before their used in a crime.

Will they come back? Well, many bank robbers would get away with it if they didn't have the habit of robbing the same bank twice. You might consider moving your inventory to a relative's place until you find a new home.

I live in an apt and I bolt the door as soon as I come in, keep the blinds drawn day and night, and have a big dog who lets me know if anyone walks within 20 feet of the building. Honestly, I'm always a bit surprised when I come home and find that all my stuff is still here. It's a crappy world.

What were the guns they stole?
