My apartment complex is in downtown Farmington, NM. Not a big city, but we have our share of violence.
About one week ago I *almost* put myself in a situation.
It was a weeknight, around midnight so I was in bed. I'm a VERY light sleeper, I have to have a fan on all night to drown out all the bumps and creeks that normally wake me up.

I awoke to the faint sound of spraypaint outside my bedroom window. At this point I was VERY tempted to grab my Saiga shotgun and H&K USP to investigate, but thought better of it. At the time I rationalized that it was my neighbor who airbrush's, outside working on an art project of his. The fact that it was midnight alarmed me, but I let it be figuring it was a quirk of his. The last thing I wanted to do was storm out on my neighbor with guns drawn!

The next moring on my walk to work I noticed my neighbors house next to me had been "tagged" The graffiti ran across the door and onto the wall, and said some very unpleasent things.

On my way home from work I came across two squad cars and four LEO's talking to my neighbors outside their apt on the front steps. Their door was open so I assume the cops had also been inside, as one seemed to be hanging around the entrance to the dwelling.

My first thought was how MANY people lived in that apt, I must have seen two adult women, three or four adult men, and at least two children, all in a two bedroom apt. I'm pretty sure they all live there as they can be noisy neighbors, and I hear alot of different voices through the wall.

Not to mention the "young adults" always hang around the backside on the steps, drinking, smoking and genrally giving me the eyeball when I pass by.

I *assume* these youths are in a gang. And if they are not, I'm pretty sure they *want* to be. Their attitude is classic thug, plus "run in a pack" mentality.

Now I do not know these neighbors very well, and please don't take this the wrong way or out of context, but they are Navajo's and are NOT very friendly to me. Because of this I never felt encouraged to introduce myself.

Reguardless, I now feel like I have some facts to straighten out.

Anyway sorry about the rant, and the run on sentences, and genral lack of formatting:rolleyes:

But my questions are as follows:

Would there be anything to gain by going out that night and confronting who ever was out there that night?

What would you do if the vandilism happend again?

How would you discover more about the identity and intent of these neighbors?

I'm not worried about theft so much, my apt looks rather drab, althoit is filled with lots of expensive and fast turn over loot:uhoh: But I am very interested in keeping this area of the neighborhood pleasent. IE: no dealers, Vandals, or gangs. What tactics other than "neighborhood watch" would be applicable?

Anyway guys thanks for reading and thanks in advance for the responses.

I don't think that there would have been much to gain. Yeah your presents with your armorment would have scared the crap outta the tagger and as well you could have informed the neighbors, they may have credited you aft er that, and probably stopped giving you such an ugly eying every day. Or just the opposite could have happened, they might have, if not already do, accused/assumed that you are the one that has tagged their home/entrance.

It's one of those oh well situations, but I would suggest that you offer to help clean it off the walls and door. They might change their minds about you and start being more neighborly towards you. I can understand why you would give us the info about there native/ethnic background. It is said that racism still live on these days in our country, and I can understand that some native american tribes still have a resentment towards white folk. Now don't get me wrong I am not saying that everyone from a specific tribe hates whites, I am saying that there are some natives that do, just like there is anyone of any race that hates another just because they are of another. So it's possible that they are stereo-typing you, but I am not saying that's the case.

Had you confronted them with a firearm, you likely would have:

A) Opened yourself to retaliation from unknown assailants who probably know your routine.

B) Let them know you have firearms.

C) Faced un-necessary heat from the Powers That Be.

email me in a coupla weeks, and I can send you a coupla "video surveillance" signs you can tack on some phone poles...

Gratis.

Awsome Idea bogie. thanks for the offer, but I'll print a few today at work:D

I have one of those marine 500,000cp rechargeable lights just for these situations. That and a video camera make a nice backup when the presentation of a firearm is not appropriate.

Scum like that are like cockroaches: flip on the light and they scatter.

I caught some neighborhood kids busting the neighbor's wooden fence up...for no reason other than to entertain themselves. I videotaped them first, then chased them off. When the neighbor got home, I gave him the video and he took it to the police.

Those kids parents ended up with a nice bill for the criminal property damage the brats did. Gee....even since then, I haven't seen them on this block. Sometimes the system does work.

Call the cops. You're not Batman, and it's not your job to go in guns blazing trying to get the bad guys. That's their job.

Other than that, I probably would have done the same thing you did, go back to sleep.

I have a friend who had lived in Farmington before, and recently moved back. She tells me it's worse than Roswell, which I used to live in and hate. My mom got stabbed in a carjacking back in January in Roswell, by some 16 yr old punk who did it because.....drumroll please..." I don't know why I did it, I was high"

My mother is fine now, and the kid was promptly busted by Roswell's finest, +1 for the cops in this situation, but now my mom believes me when I tell her why she needs to be more suspicious and much less trusting.

Going out and confronting them probably would have been a bad idea. It's a disproportional amount of force for the situation. Probably better just to call the police and report suspicious behavior. Mention they might be prowlers or burglars, and unless you're police are completely overworked they'll probably respond.

Walking to work this morning I found an empty 12 pack by the steps to my back door:fire:

I'll hang a few of my new signs and take some pics:evil:

One of the worst possible things you can do is get yourself involved in other peoples' business; Other people meaning people you do not count as friends or acquaintances.

It just means you will get ground up between the two opposing parties.

Get to know neighbors that are worth knowing; Keep track of the others.

Always keep in mind that defending the property of others is not your responsibility, it is the owner's; Calling the police would be appropriate in such circumstances.

I had thought Farmington was a bit more quiet and peaceful than that, but Socorro sure seemed sleepy enough on the surface before I had lived there a few years...

Move. It is not going to get better.

Not everyone can afford to live in the suburbs.

You did fine, this is definetly a call-the-cops offense, no reason for you to get involved.

Took the words out of my mouth. I don't see any benefit from a confrontation. Call the police and let them know what is occurring and when.

Moving is not a bad idea. I hate that any of us need to relocate due to the actions of others, but self preservation trumps inconvenience in my view.

Good luck with this one.

Take care,

My advice to move... not to the highest rental place, there must be better places to live, not in a higher rent place, but a different place, talk to the boys in blue, they will help, they know the places that produce the most mileage!

i garentee you, the last thing a 16 year old wanna be thug wants to see is the sight of a P.O. home owner with a shotgun, when he is graffing some guy's house.

might even convince him of better things to do.

Dude you cant just go pulling guns on people. I agree with some of what people said thus far. You can move. Or what I might do (depending on the situation-you know better than me obviously) I would introduce myself and get to know them. Even if they are gang bangers, I would rather be cool with them then not be. Just my .02

yeah man, i know, but these guys apparently dont fear the cops,
and even if they do get arrested, its just a slap on the wrists.

i see where your goin with getting to know them, turns out they might be allright people who got in with the wrong crowd, and gaining their respect might spare you future vandilism, or they just might be lookin for trouble. you never know

Read up on the Landlord/Tenant Act for your state.

A few years ago I moved from one apartment to another, just a mile apart, but it might as well have been from Pleasantville to Beirut. The day I signed my lease, the police had tracked a fugitive there and shot him to death as he was fleeing. My "neighbors" upstairs, all 20 or so of them, beat up 3 girls in front of my living room. The dealers were right outside my bedroom. Three bangers dry-fired a Glock towards my apartment. A sheriff's deputy who lived down the street took 10 youths at gunpoint outside my bedroom. I had to move.

An afternoon's research revealed that in Oklahoma, known gang activity is valid reason to break your lease. I drafted a letter detailing all the incidents I knew of, handed it to the leasing agent, and told her to read it and sign it. Once she did, I gave her another letter stating that my lease was now void and I'd be moving. They even returned my deposits.

Have you ever tried talking to them? That might be the first approach and the best avenue. Just because they are a gang of kids does not mean that they are a gang in the criminal organized sense.

Call the cops. Dont get involved. You will just open yourself up as a future target. If it is a rental, you should care even less (in my opinion). I assume the landlord is responsible for the exterior damage. MYOB applies here. :)

It's a good idea to get to know the neighbors and avoid confrontations. This is a problem for the landlord and law enforcement. Document problems with video and inform both the landlord and the police about illegal activity. The evidence may be used for breaking a lease if you think it's too dangerous to live where you're at.

Get to know them. Try to find common ground. Invite them into your home. Take them for a drive. Give them a few cans of spray paint to show that you mean well. Take them out shooting. Let them look at your guns. Explain where you keep them. Show them the love and affection and understanding that they so obviously have missed in their lives.

Be the Barack Obama that they need. It's better to decorate an egg than to crack one.

Moving would be nice. But without going into details I'll say where I'm at now works perfect for my work schedule, and the price is more than right.

So for the moment I'm not planning on moving.

I did make some surveilliance signs, put a few outside and around.

I was able to break the ice with another upstairs neighbor, so now he knows exactly who lives in my apt. and who doesn't.

Thanks for the advice guys. If there is continued activity I will call the police.
