I have had a recent weight problem that's quite honestly prevented me from using some of the IWB holsters I have made for carrying my EDC Ruger SP101.
Prior to gaining weight (several medicines I have had to take have weight gain side effects) I was fond of appendix IWB carry because it was most comfortable and gave me the access I need. Anyone here carry on the waistband in the 1:00 position (over the appendix)? How does it work out? I can make myself a few holsters for this type carry if it seems practical. Thanks. Don

I carry and train to fight from the Appendix position. I tried all kinds of things and this is the best for me. I can conceal a number of pretty large pistols there including a Beretta Px4 SC, Glock 26, Ruger LCR etc. The advantages of Appendix are huge - you can conceal without printing, access the pistol while seated in a car, draw faster with minimal "flagging" as the hand is in a more optimal position, you can draw behind a clipboard or while some guy has you pinned on the ground, etc.

I carry at 12:30 - 1:00 in High Noon holsters (tuckable) with zero cant and prefer low riders like the Hidden Ally. That said I lost 30 lbs to pull it off and, in my opinion, it gets progressively harder to be comfortable and efficient from Appendix with every pound one gains. This is opinion and it may not be the same for all depending on age, flexibility, equipment and pistol size, and general build and the way one dresses.

But Appendix IWB is "The Bomb" for me. It is awful uncomfortable with a belly or thick midsection for me. Presently 185 - 190ish at 6' 3" and slightly muscular. When I was 215ish and wider in the middle it was not possible.

Carrying *on* the belt at Appendix? You'll need a hiding garment that is buttoned or not open at the front unless concealment is no issue.

Vodoun I agree with your observations. Some medications though cause me to retain fluids and easily gain weight (not excuses, just a fact I've discussed with my physician). Despite portion control it's going to be this way a while it seems. I'm in an open carry state but often do wear a shirt untucked, so 1) printing really doesn't concern me and 2) I usually have a way of covering my weapon. I suppose it boils down to simply wearing a zero cant belt holster in the appendix position. I can make something like that.
The wonderful thing about working with leather is you can make yourself as many holsters as you like for about $10 in good material, albeit $60 worth of time.
Thanks for the validation. I believe I'll design a holster for my "special needs" soon.

Please show it off when you do that....as you discovered with your medications at some point in my life I may have to deal with the same issue and I'd love to have options while continuing to carry in the same place! :)

I carry a Commander in a radical cant in front of the hip. When I bend or sit, the gun fits in the crevice and I am aware that you should not point your gun at anything you do not want to destroy.
I am 5-11 and weigh a little over 200. I wear the "shoot me" vests but they cover well. Gotta watch the gusts of wind.

I have been carrying IWB at appendix position for the past 40 or so yrs. I have had and carried in that style S&W J, K frames (short bbls), Colt Commander, Kahr P40, Sig 229 and Glock 19. Usually it's been a Bianchi rawhide type holster with belt clip, Obviously, the J frames fit that type carry best, however, I just recently started with the G19 and it has been my go to gun with no problems in a Blackhawk leather IWB with a belt loop. By the way 6-4 and 220lbs.
