My daughter and I will be attending the Gainesville fl Appleseed event in May. My main goal is to have an instructor add to the basics I have been teaching her. I will be attending also. Will we be divided by age? Is the day started with classroom first followed range work? I am just trying to get a feel for the itinerary of both days how the event is set up.

Thanks,
Eric

I have attended two (2) Appleseed shooting events in CT within the last year and a half. In each one, all of shooters were on the same firing line. I think the youngest one at both was probably about 15 yrs old, with a few college-aged kids mixed in as well.

We did not have a indoor classroom available at the ranges we used, but we had kind of an impromptu outdoor classroom sessions/periods of instruction, interspersed with history, during the lulls in shooting. I don't think the Appleseed shoots are designed for an indoor classroom portion. I think they're all outdoor events, regardless of the weather.

I've had very positive experiences with my Appleseed shoots. I am a very experienced shooter. I have previously served 9+ years in the military (Army Special Forces and Military Intelligence) and I have been a LEO for 15 years. I have competed in many local Action Shooting matches and 2-gun/3-gun competitions in CT. I've also completed several tactical firearms courses with some of the best firearms instructors in the industry, on my own dime outside of both the military and LE training I've received. I feel as though the Appleseed shoots are excellent in reinforcing the basics of shooting that I initially learned in the military.

I think it's fantastic that you're getting your daughter involved in the shooting sports! What a great way for the both of you to bond! I hope to get my daughter and son involved, as well, when they get a little older (they're only 6 and 3 respectively). Enjoy your Appleseed!

I'll be attending my first appleseed this summer.
From the answers to a few of my questions I gather they won't split you apart from your daughter unless you want to.
If you want to be near other gun forum members, they can accommodate that too.
You will shoot both days with more range time on the 2nd.
bring about 400-500rds of ammo, per gun.
actually, bring everything on the list. best to have it and not need it than to not

Once again, nothing but good things said about the Appleseed shoots. Thanks for the information. I can't wait to go.

Appleseed was great. However, the ground is hard. I would recommend you and your daughter watch your favorite TV show (30 minutes) in prone position on some nice soft carpet. After those 30 minutes think of everything that kinda hurts and multiply by 20 or so. You will spend a ton of time in prone position. My appleseed was on gravel. We had some surplus shooting mats and a padded shooting jacket. My left rib was killing me and my right elbow was raw. I invested $8 after the first day for a flexible elbow pad that made shooting much more comfortable. Your mileage may vary or I'm just a wuss. But its a lot of up and down on day 1 and I hadn't exercised or even stretched in years and felt it. All in all a great event, got my patch 2nd try.

You should be on the line right beside her if its like the all the others. Huge fun. You'll like it. As far as elbow pads and stuff here's what I did. Walmart has area rug size carpets. Like 20 bucks. One of those cut in half and I had about 18" of a 1/2" yoga matt laying around. Layed that at the front of carpet for elbows. Works good.

Going to my first AS

in two weeks. I do have a carpet remnant and a not so expensive shooting mat. I found volley ball knee/elbow pads at Wal-Mart for $6 a pair. They are for volley ball so read that "females" meaning the large size fit my elbows. I look forward to this and learning a lot. I am 69 years old, a veteran but was in Navy and they don't each marksmanship, at least not in 1960 when I went through basic.

I've been to a lot of these events and taken my son with me. You are not required to shoot, so you can act as her personal instructor if you would like. Stuff that would be a good idea to bring:

Stop by your local department store or sporting goods store and pick up a couple of cheap exercise mats. I found pilates mats at Wally World for about $10 apiece. Caught some grief from some of the guys initially, but probably because they were embarassed about not having thought of it and spent a lot more money on some pretty pricey shooting mats. I see a lot of that until I out shoot them. You know, my 22 is not as cool as their AR (but at the end of the day I'm not broke from the ammo cost), their ACOG will outperform my $30 3X9 scope (really? at 25 meters?), things like that.

Bring bottled water and snacks, of course eye and ear protection, and a hat for each of you. Also bring a blanket or something you can put over your rifle when you are not shooting. They get pretty hot laying in the sun between sets. Try to get there early enough to pick your lanes. I shoot Appleseed with a 22 (as most people do), She'll need a rifle, an M1 style rifle strap (they will cover hasty and loop sling usage), and two magazines, ideally 10 rounds each. There will be some sets with mag changes (2 and 8 rounds) and some with simply 10 rounds with no required changes.

Ok, the reason for picking your lanes: rimfire rifles are going to spit their empties at the person to their right. Centerfires (mostly) will launch them over the person to their right and pelt the next person. So if you get someone shooting rimfire to your left and her to your right and you are playing instructor rather than shooter she won't be catching hot cases.

AQT Targets
10 rounds Standing in 2 minutes - possible 50 points

10 rounds Standing to Seated in 50 seconds with a mag change (load 2 & 8 or if your rifle doesn't allow that load 5 & 5)
5 rounds per target - possible 50 points

10 rounds Standing to Prone in 60 seconds with a mag change (same as above)
3 on first target, 3 on second, and 4 on last - possible 50 points

10 rounds Slowfire Prone in 5 minutes. No mag change necessary
2 on first target, 2 on second, 3 on third, and 3 on last - Double the score on this stage for 100 possible points.

Total clean score would be 250 points.

Since this is a Quick and Dirty AQT and uses only 40 rounds instead of the full blown AQT with 50, and also due to the smaller number of targets and NPOA shifts, it takes a score of 210 instead of 200 to qualify.

And yes. it can be done. I've shot 250 ;)

Here is a neat trick for Appleseed to speed you up: In some sets there are required mag changes. You will be instructed to load a magazine with 2 rounds first and then you will go to another magazine with 8. Load your first mag, fire one round and drop your mag replacing it with your second. Your second round is already loaded and you will not have to rack the bolt.;)

UF finals permiting, I will be one of the orange hats (instructor in training) at the event. The shoot boss for the event is one of the best in florida.

As an appleseed instructor, I only ask that ask her (and yourself) to be open to try any suggestions that we have as far as instructions go. I went into my first appleseed thinking i knew how to shoot. I would have progressed much faster if i had brought a better teachable attitude with me from day 1. If you and her are open to instruction, you will receive some of the best riflery instruction available today.

Everyone will be shooting together, all will shoot at the same time. Chances are there will not be a whole lot of shooters on the line.

Bring a folding chair and lunch for each of you as well as a shooting mat of some sort,

The first day is mostly technique and position instruction, rifle sighting in, some drills, and a few AQT's, sunday is a few drills, mostly AQT's, and a few fun surprises thrown in there

The event is at Gainesville Target Range where the ground is mostly a clay type soil, so a good shooting mat is a nice thing to have

I also suggest either elastic elbow pads or a long sleeve t shirt to protect against brass burns on your elbows

also bring a staple gun if you have one

if you have any other questions or concerns just let me know

I took my daughter to our first Appleseed together. Once I got over the dad thing and let the instructors do their instructing without me butting in, my daughter and I had a great time.

Pikid89, thanks for the info. I cannot wait to get her there. We both have open and teachable personalities. I know I need correction and I want my daughter to learn the correct way from the get go. I am truly excited to hear from someone familiar with the Gainesville event. I need to get slings for both rifles. I have one on mine but it is not the proper type.
