I've been to a lot of these events and taken my son with me. You are not required to shoot, so you can act as her personal instructor if you would like. Stuff that would be a good idea to bring:
Stop by your local department store or sporting goods store and pick up a couple of cheap exercise mats. I found pilates mats at Wally World for about $10 apiece. Caught some grief from some of the guys initially, but probably because they were embarassed about not having thought of it and spent a lot more money on some pretty pricey shooting mats. I see a lot of that until I out shoot them. You know, my 22 is not as cool as their AR (but at the end of the day I'm not broke from the ammo cost), their ACOG will outperform my $30 3X9 scope (really? at 25 meters?), things like that.
Bring bottled water and snacks, of course eye and ear protection, and a hat for each of you. Also bring a blanket or something you can put over your rifle when you are not shooting. They get pretty hot laying in the sun between sets. Try to get there early enough to pick your lanes. I shoot Appleseed with a 22 (as most people do), She'll need a rifle, an M1 style rifle strap (they will cover hasty and loop sling usage), and two magazines, ideally 10 rounds each. There will be some sets with mag changes (2 and 8 rounds) and some with simply 10 rounds with no required changes.
Ok, the reason for picking your lanes: rimfire rifles are going to spit their empties at the person to their right. Centerfires (mostly) will launch them over the person to their right and pelt the next person. So if you get someone shooting rimfire to your left and her to your right and you are playing instructor rather than shooter she won't be catching hot cases.
AQT Targets
10 rounds Standing in 2 minutes - possible 50 points
10 rounds Standing to Seated in 50 seconds with a mag change (load 2 & 8 or if your rifle doesn't allow that load 5 & 5)
5 rounds per target - possible 50 points
10 rounds Standing to Prone in 60 seconds with a mag change (same as above)
3 on first target, 3 on second, and 4 on last - possible 50 points
10 rounds Slowfire Prone in 5 minutes. No mag change necessary
2 on first target, 2 on second, 3 on third, and 3 on last - Double the score on this stage for 100 possible points.
Total clean score would be 250 points.
Since this is a Quick and Dirty AQT and uses only 40 rounds instead of the full blown AQT with 50, and also due to the smaller number of targets and NPOA shifts, it takes a score of 210 instead of 200 to qualify.
And yes. it can be done. I've shot 250
Here is a neat trick for Appleseed to speed you up: In some sets there are required mag changes. You will be instructed to load a magazine with 2 rounds first and then you will go to another magazine with 8. Load your first mag, fire one round and drop your mag replacing it with your second. Your second round is already loaded and you will not have to rack the bolt.
