I see that Armalite sells magazines for the AR-10 but, are there any other sources? They seem pretty expensive. Are the biggest the 20rd mags? Are AR-10 mags interchangeable with any other rifle mags? Thanks.

Welcome to the club. You might check out AR15.com once in a while. One of the forum members is attempting to design and build an improved magazine. I keep hoping Armalite gets the message, but no joy. :(

On the other hand, you can buy new 20 rounders from Armalite for $39, so at least you don't have to cut up perfectly good M-14 magazines anymore.

You can use them in the M1A, but the BHO won't work. This only applies for as long as they maintain the M14 style catch on the rear of the mag, which they are no longer legally required to do.

I've been told Bushmaster makes a gun that will use FAL magazines.
Yes, but you'll find the Bushmaster 308 to be several hundred dollars more expensive, and no chrome barrel if that matters. If you only buy a few mags, the Armalite is the cheaper package and has the longer track record.

What does BHO mean? Also, are the Armalite mags considered reliable? Thanks again.

BHO = Bolt Hold Open

Armalite has gone through some fits in the last few years with the vendor stamping their bodies. The newest ones I recently received seem fine, but older ones may or may not have problems. For best results, I would buy your mags direct from Armalite and shy away from anything used. Even if the vendor can truthfully claim he had no problems, tolerance interactions with your rifle may change that situation.

Armalite AR-10 magazines hold cartridges, and most of the time they even feed them.

The problem is when Armalite began using their slanted plungers to accomodate the people who don't like pressing the plunger in after the second round. This new design began causing problems, specifically with last rounds slamming into the chamber at extreme angles. That way you get a jam and a bullet lodged another 1/8" into the case.

Armalite has fixed the problem by going back to the old plunger style and shipping them all to the Canadian military while continuing to ship the defective merchandise to the US civilian market.

I have also heard that Armalite has a "mil-spec" magazine with a metal follower of some sort. I really want a large version of the 20 round AR mag, with no plunger in the follower.

I think I would even pay $30-$40 each for good mags.
