I am looking for an AR chambered in 308. The Ruger SR762 looks nice but I have not been able to track one down.

How are the Armalite AR10s?

I just picked one up a couple weeks ago. I have been pretty happy with it although I have only put about thirty rounds through it as I have had little time to spare on the weekends since. It stove piped a few rounds (probably 4) out of the 30 and I have read that stove pipes can be problem for the first 200 rounds. There is a variety of fixes but not one commonality so I intend to see for myself. I had been looking at a Wyndom Weaponry AR10 for a few weeks but when I went back to purchase it, someone else had beat me to it so I bought the Armalite instead. To be continued.

Excellent, can't go wrong with 'em. You just have to choose between the A pattern (DPMS & Magpul mags) and the B models (Armalite mags). The Armalite mags are better, but twice as expensive.

I had an AR-10A2 carbine, swore I'd never part with it. But when you have a chance to trade a $2K rifle for a vertical mill that easily worth $7k, you do it! I have a DPMS pattern now, an Ares signature lower built with a PSA 18" SS kit with the MI SSK15 handguard and magpul furniture. I would have preferred another Armalite, but I'd have spent a lot more building an Armalite up like this:

It now wears one of my Ti comps and an ATN X-sight, plus a Black Rain 3.5 lb trigger, and I'm still only into it for about $1,700.

I have an Armalite AR10 as well. It's a fine piece of equipment but as noted above the DPMS pattern rifles have more aftermarket support. Given the choice, I would go Armalite again, well, just because. No other reason.

But I would trade it in a heartbeat for a $7k vertical mill...

Springfield M&P10 and more so the DPMS Gen II looked like the best bang for the buck when I last researched into them. The DPMS's should take off really well since they are compatible with almost anything AR-15, reportedly have fantastic reliability, and are about as light as an AR-15 as physics allow. If I was less responsible with my money, I'd have one already

Pay attention to what the guys are saying about the "Pattern". Unlike the AR 15 riles the AR 10 guns are not as easy to swap parts on. Give this thread a read.
Mine is an older Armalite AR-10T and twenty five years ago the selection was much more limited than what is out there today. I am happy with the rifle and have been for many years.

You just need to find what works for you. Would I buy another Armalite gun? Absolutely but they are what I like, you need to make you happy.

Years back, I bought a DPMS AP4 in .308 Win. It shot well, but it literally stank. I sent it back to DPMS, and they stated that the upper receiver had been milled too tight. I had them customize the rifle with their 3-pound, steel upper, and an extra-tight barrel, and a free float handguard. It was a nice, but heavy rifle. DPMS' customer service was first rate, and that says a lot coming from me. I tend to be very picky.

I currently have a S&W, M&P-10. It's fairly light and has so far been 100% reliable. The only reason I would give a nod to S&W over any other make and model is that H&M metal in Ohio effects the "black nitride" treatment to 100% of the steel on the M&Ps. I'm not sure how much more durable the black nitriding renders the rifle, but I do know that it adds an exceptional level of corrosion resistance. Below is a link to H&M Metal. The video on the site is pretty interesting to watch.
