Assault rifles if they have full auto features. But if civilian versions, then just semi autos.

They are semi-auto rifles and it's to our advantage to refer to them as that and encourage others do the same. We play into the gun-grabbers hands when we call them "assault rifles".

Modern sporting rifle doesn't make much sense either since the designs go back to the 1940s and 1950s. Of course they're still current but they've been around many decades.
Modern in that they're being marketed as a gun for the field. Open up most hunting rags as of late, and you'll see a few ARs with free float tubes in camo amongst the pages. Don't remember seeing much of that a decade ago.

I'm not going to call a 65 year old design(AK) a "modern" utility rifle. They are semi auto rifles. "Assault rifles" are journalist jargon for anything looking scary, as far as civilians are concerned.

I voted "other."

They are "platforms."
When referring to the whole family of AR's or AK's, certainly, just as you'd refer to the Remington 700 platform when speaking of that design and all variants (rather than particular rifles or particular variants).
