Levergun and revolver. .357 in an urban environment, 44 mag for rural.

Well, that's what I'd have in the USA. Over here, we need to justify why we "need" guns to get a licence. *sigh*. So if TS does HTF it'll be me, my Marlin 30-30, and my Astra 357. Or maybe the Taurus 357, more conceal-able but less accurate.

AR10 + SA XD .45 Tac

-both shoot better than i ever could

-both are real world reliable

-both work well on two and four legged critters

-the only pieces missing at this point would be a .22 (10/22) and a 12ga pump

kBob asked an interesting question:

I wish we could have this poll with more data, such as how old are you and have you served in the military ( and yeas I count the Guard and Reserve, and even the Air Farce) or as a sworn LEO.

Might be interesting to see the ages and back grounds of the AVERAGE responder in each group.
My answer to that is, I'm 55 years old, never served in the military, and I'm not an LEO. My answer to the original post was "a bolt rifle and any pistol in a caliber starting with "4". I like both revolvers and semi autos, and own both. I suppose if it was a real SHTF situation, I'd go with a revolver."

kBob, if you're reading this, what do you make of it? Just curious...

Depends on what I was doing. If I was out in the woods, I'd take a .357mag Rifle/pistol combination. If I were in a combat zone, I'd probably want an M1A or an AR and a semi-auto of some kind (probably a Sig or HK in either .45 or .40).

Annoyed,

Not trying to make anything of it just curious.

In your case a bolt action and a revolver are what I would expect some on of our vintage without military or LEO experience. Not saying this is bad or anything.

As it happens I'm 53 and served as both an Enlisted Infantryman and Commissioned Artlery office. Never been a sworn LEO. but my degrees are an AA in centralization in Law Enforcement and a BS in Crim.

I started getting comfortable with the M-1 and 1911 in Highschool begining in 1968.

Doesn't mean my choice is "better" than yours, just my picks based on what I am familure with. My first "civilian" bolt action center fire is less than a decade old. If I had had a "normal" up bringing maybe I would have picked the same as you.

Brain,

Thanks for you response and service.

I'm personally partial to a Marlin 1894 in 357 magnum with a Ruger GP-100 as it's stable mate. After that my Ruger P95 and the PC9 are my next favorites followed by Ruger's 10/22 and a SP-101 in 22 LR.

I approached this from a SHTF scenario (zombie invasion, say).

I would've gone AK and revolver, but extra ammo for wheelies can get irritating to carry in bulk. Plus, you can hardly turn around without finding, say, 9mm ammo.

an AK and a 1911/BHP would be tough to beat.

kBob, thanks for the answer. It's an interesting study. I wonder for how many people who have served in the military, the weapon (either rifle or sidearm) they were issued was their very first experience with a firearm. For those who served and were already familiar with firearms, I wonder how their military experience colored their choices for the purpose of this thread topic.

As a lifelong civilian, the first centerfire rifle I ever fired was one I went out and bought. The first handgun I ever fired was a 1943 Ithica 1911A1 I inherited from my dad when he died in 1990. In fact, it was inheriting that pistol that started my love affair with firearms. Before that, they just weren't on my radar.

lever gun/revolver in same caliber

thats my vote and I'm sticking to it.
well, I guess I do want a cool AR platform gun that takes glock .40 mags tooo....

Over the years my choice has evolved. Once I would have selected a nice short flat top AR with optics (probably aimpoint like I have) and a co-witness setup. For the handgun I would have choosen my 1911 in 10mm.

I guess I am much more concerned with my ability to hunt than the possibility of having to defend myself with a rifle.

I would choose my favorite bolt action (30-06) and a good concealable revolver in 357 magnum if I had to choose.

Fortunately I do not...So I can tailor my combo to my personal needs at the time.

Guess I am a bit of of odd ball, I picked the bolt rifle with the steel frame semi, but I really have a couple of different options that I would be just as happy with, including a reliable pistol/carbine combo as well as a high powered level gun (my Browing BLR 308 comes to mind) with either a solid /357 or 44mag revolver or semi in 9mm, .40 or .45. Not to mention the ole Remmy 870 or Mossy 500 with both slug and smooth bore barrels. (Which might be the most versatile of tools). I am just very comfortable with just about any of these combos for a generic what if. Now if you get into more specific circumstances then I would have to look at the suitability of the weapons for those purposes but in general just about any would be servicable.
