Greetings,

I am a bolt action and AK /SIG 556 guy. I just got my first AR-15 and I watched a few videos about AR-15 dissassembly. Please, don't be mad at my stupid question.

They are all like this one: http://www.learnaboutguns.com/2008/08/05/ar-15-disassembly-and-reassembly-for-cleaning-video-clip/

The guy talks about field stripping. I understand the cleaning of the bolt, canon and receiver in general. But nowhere I saw any talk about the piston (like AK and SGI 556) cleaning. Can anyone points me on that part of the cleaning process please?

Thank you

what are you trying to do remove the piston? i might be able to talk you through it

Greetings,

Does the piston need cleaning like an AK or a SIG 556?

Thank you

i think hes asking what parts of the gas system he should clean on his AR

gas tube with a pipe cleaner, and gas key on top of the bolt.

Greetings,

oh!!! So, if I am undestanding well, I just need to dissassemble the bolt, clean it, clean the canon and inside the receiver where the bolt slide...

Am I right?

Thank you

There is absolutely no reason to stick a pipe cleaner up a gas tube. They are Stainless steel, and self cleaning.

The part that corresponds to a gas piston on the AR is the bolt & bolt carrier. Take them apart & clean them following these pretty clear instructions.

clean the canon
Not sure what part you are calling a canon?

Unless you have one of the newer designs like POF, SABER(i think) or LMT may be several others you have a gas tube running from the barrel/front of hand guard back to the receiver. The above mentioned companies as well as others are starting to make rifles and uppers that use a piston like you AK or SIG. Thats why I bought a Sig 556. I like the piston design more than the gas impingment (I think that is what it is called)

Greetings,

Thank you for all the answers. Box o thruth explained perfectly what I wanted to know.

Canon=barrel. :)

Thank you

Greetings,

I am Canadian, proudly left that socialist country that is Canada to move to the futur communist USA.

I went from Canuck to Redneck (living in Georgia now) and I am proud of it!

I am still fighting with my wife to be able to put a sign on my land :
No trespassing, If you can red it, I can shoot you!

She wants no sign... She does not want to warn them...LOL

Thank you

there's nothing you can do for your gas tube but screw things up- it's like a chimney- NEVER **** with a chimney. same principle.

you do need to clean out your gas key on the carrier from time to time. i do every time i clean, which is every time i shoot. if you're not shooting 500 rounds a session, you can probably skip cleaning every other time, or every 3 times even, if you're a 100-round session kind of guy.
