I like the way these look. The longer the FH the better.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Colt_XM-177E1.jpg

I do NOT want to mess with SBRing it.

I have a lower and upper receiver ready but no barrel/sight/gas/forend.

Need advice on where I can find a lightweight profile lookalike with pinned/welded flash hider that will be legal length.

Yes, I realize it will be stupid having 16" length but 12-14" ballistics. I don't care. I just want a light rifle that looks cool.

Any tips/sources/welcome.

There is a FH that will give the "look" without sacrificing barrel length.

Called a 5 1/2 Slipover Flash Hider. 20 bucks at PKFirearms.com

Install on any LW AR barrel.

Thanks! However:

5 1/2 Slipover Flash Hider
Slipover design goes back over the barrel to give 16" barrels an XM177 style look. 1/2 x 28 standard AR15 thread. Sized for HBAR or M4 profile barrels. Can be used on .625" LW barrels, but will have a gap at the rear of the flash hider.

It's a little pricey, but have you looked at the AAC Blackout flash hider/suppressor mount? It looks similar, but doesn't add much more OAL to the barrel than a standard flash hider.

I'm looking for a barrel attachment that either:

1. installs on a 16" barrel but gives the appearance of a short-barreled XM177, like the one M1key posted, or
2. installs on a 10-12-whatever length barrel and can be pinned/welded to bring the length to over 16".

#1 seems to be the frontrunner as far as ease and cost go ATM.

Keep the ideas coming. As you can tell I'm not the most well-informed guy where ARs are concerned.

I have slip overs on two of my AR's, a 6920 and a dedicated 22 upper:

with CAR handguards it really does look much like an XM-177: http://www.thehighroad.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=148323&d=1314827106

I got one from DPMS, one from Model One Sales.

Model One Sales will sell you a XM welded on slot flash hider and 11 inch barrel upper complete with BCG for $480, 360 without. http://www.model1sales.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=category.display&category_id=319

Model One doesn't offer this configuration in 300 AAC, or I'd get one.

1k, BCM has their 11.5" lightweight barrel in stock for the moment. You can buy the 5.5" XM177 style flash hider from Model 1 for under $20. After you get a front sight base on the bbl any gunsmith worth his salt should be able to pin & weld the FH on for a reasonable fee. Or let the smith handle both. Then you can install the bbl assembly on an A1 upper receiver and really get the look.

^ I just built a rifle w/ a BCM .625 16" barrel and IMHO, it's a good barrel. Just keep in mind it will get hot very fast. 20rd mag fired at Aimed rapid fire will get it hot enough you could brand something w/ it. Not a problem for my purpose, but something to consider.

I want the look with decent ballistics, and I found out a good way for me:
Use a mid length gas system with 16" and a slipover FH.
You still get the snubby look with a longer handguard.

Many thanks, folks. Lots of good info. Autopistola, which slipover did you use? Are any of them compatible with lighter-profile barrels or do they all leave gaps at the rear?

I had one of the slip-on XM style flashiders, I didn't care for how the weight up front changed the handling, so I went back to an A1. Maybe with a rear stock heavier than the 4 position CAR it'd have been better, but I ended up also replacing the 4 position stock and tube with a 6 position tube and Magpul CTR stock after I added a free-float quad rail for a red dot after I got old enough for iron sights to be more frustration than fun. Pinned/welded muzzle devices limit your options down the road.

Barrel wise I'd reccomend the Daniel Defense CHF Pencil Barrel. The length on the barrel in the picture "looks" like an 11" barrel, I'd either go with their 11.5" and get the long FH pinned. The barrels can be ordered with a FSP from DD, but if you want a period correct FSP then youll have to look around. I'd post in some BST forums a WTB thread asking about that.
