i have been wanting an ar-15 for a while, but coming up with that much dough all at once is difficult for me. so i was looking at stripped lowers this morning. there seems to be a HUGE price difference in some of them. the norm, sems to be around $125.00 (+shipping). the most expensive i have found so far is $149.00, and the lowest was $59.00. the $59.00 ones are being sold as "surplus", whatever that means. they are made by AERO PERCISION. since i dont know anything about this, i figured i had better ask a few questions. the LAST thing i want to do is have an entire gun built, and find out the reciever is scrap. and i have to start all over again. i THINK these are supposed to all be made the same. but supposed to and actually are can be worlds apart. is there one lower better than the rest? is it that much better? is there something special i should be looking for in a lower?

I'd stick with a name brand like DPMS, Stag, Bushmaster, Spikes, etc.

Anything being sold as "surplus" for $59 bucks sounds like somebody else had a problem already.

Might be fine for an experianced AR builder to fool with, but for your first AR build you want to work, I wouldn't recommend it.

I've seen the same stripped lowers for that price & was wondering the same. I believe I found them in an issue of Shotgun news. Their from a company called R Guns in IL. The lowers were made at Delaware Machinery. Mil Spec.

Whatever you do stay AWAY from Vulcan polymer receivers, my first build was with one of them because I found it cheaper (new old stock), it worked great until the top portion of the spring (buffer) tube threads sheared off, dropped a line to Vulcan and they wanted $85/hr. to take a look at it, their own manufacturing problem and they wanted me to pay for them to look at it, yeah, right!!.
Go with the brand named aluminum receivers and you can't go wrong, I've built 3 more and they are still working great.

Aero Precision lowers are great! Everything is in spec. Finish is nice and black. the folks at AR15.com swear by them too. ;)

Aero Precision makes excellent lowers. They use to make lowers for Spikes and I believe Armalite and maybe some others. I've built at least 5 AR's using these lowers and all have be in spec. Aero Precision is also involved in the aero space industry.

Most new lowers are really all the same, you are paying for hype, dealer cost, etc. You honestly can't really go wrong with a new lower, it's everything else that you have to work around.
