Has anyone put a muzzle compesator on their AR? Did it reduce muzzle jump enough that you thought the money was well spent? Seen one by Miculek, with six slots on the sides, for $50.00. Seen others for around 90.00...

To my knowledge no person has ever put a compensator on a .223 rifle before. You may be on to something BIG!

I always thought of them as a muzzle break, but Cheaper than Dirt, has it listed as a Compensator.

They have been called Muzzle Brakes , Ported Barrel Weights , Anti-Recoil Devices , and Compensators , among other things.

They all work to some degree at keeping the muzzle at a more level plane during recoil.

The Miculek brake works very well for the price.

don't know why you would need to tame an AR-15 muzzle jump, and it is hell on the person sitting next to you at a shooting range.

The brake lets you see your hits thru the scope. There are a significant number of dedicated varmint hunters that use them. Even though a .223 is not a macho round, the recoil blocks the view with a higher power scope.

take your AR15, stand 20' from a full-sized silhouette and pull the trigger twice as fast as you can. now put a brake/compensator on it and try it again. be sure to report back on how useful you think they are.

As a shooter, sure, they're great.

As a SO, I have occasionally felt the urge to hit shooters who have brakes with the timer. Sometimes, I've felt the urge to use a brick instead of the timer. This feeling is generally reserved for people with Miculek brakes (or Rolling Thunder comps).

Yes, I use plugs and muffs.

Yes, the urge for the brick-hitting is still there.

I have a JP Tactical Compensator on this one, works great. There isn't much recoil anyway but there is quite a difference between using it and not.

I dont have oe on my AR but I put a Miculek brakes on my .308 bolt action and it took away more then half the recoil. its sure good times watching the hats fly or their hair blown on the guys that set next to me at the range.

Recoil and AR-15 is an oxymoron. As you may have figured out Miculek and other breaks are just plain disrespectful at shooting ranges. :fire: Save yourself the money and giving people the impression you are a narcissistic clod.

The thing you will never do is eliminate all sensation of the rifle firing. No matter what you do to the muzzle, you will still have the bolt carrier and buffer movement, and the bolt rotation. You will never convince yourself that you don't feel anything. Like the others said, it's a .223 for pete's sake. Live with it.

Redneck2 you an some others get a A+ .....taliv, I don't want to shoot at full size targets at 20'. Those who are shooting at longer range with a scope, an want faster follow shots seem to understand, an thanks for the inmput, also thanks about the guys beside me at the range, I'll be cautious an not fire when someone is beside me there. Yes the .223 has little kick an recoil, but I was just wondering that a little softer recoil an jump would allow faster follow up shots, getting the crosshairs back on target faster for rapid fire or follow up shots like shooting at a coyote, or even a groundhog at long range or even short range, or if you want to see how fast you can put 10 rds in a quarter size target at 100yds.....thanks for the input guys, think I'll give a try, an see how it does...love that picture Big44mag!!!!

But...but...taliv, that would actually involve going into the real world! Outside, even! Where there's weather 'n' bugs 'n' I might learn that I don't shoot as good as I thought!

And if I run tests like that, I might get results that run counter to the beliefs that I hold to be the unquestionable truth!

No, it's better to just stay inside, on the internet where I can post about how I know that a comp won't make any difference on an AR, and is just a waste of money. Much easier that way.

FWIW, I have found that the standard profile Ben Cooley Comp reduces muzzle jump on an AR15. When it comes to quick double-taps, it makes an obvious and appreciable difference.

No idea how it feels for the RO/SO, though. But I haven't been hit with a shot timer yet.

:)

I will need to roll a 20 side die first to see if I can go outside and chance the sun.

I need a better brake on my FAL, it will make followup shots easier. I know more than a few guys who run all kinds of comps and brakes on their ARs in competition, but what do they know.

I remember the first time I ran the timer for someone with a Miculek brake on an AR. Vividly. The specifics of what came out of my mouth are not appropriate for The High Road.

Shooter thought it was funny as hell. :scrutiny:
