I'm in the market for a good AR scope. BUT...I don't wanna break the bank maybe around the $200 range. And yes I know, don't cheap out on the scope blah blah blah, don't need those comments. I'm on a bit of a budget here, looking for some good suggestions in my price range. Thanks...

I know I'll get a lot of grief on this, but bought a Barska 3-9 for my 6.8 - so far so good. I like it. It remains to be seen how long it will take to crap out. For your varmint use you'll probably want more power.

How about instead of an utter POS Barska...

The Bushnell 3200 series, some of the Nikons, and the Vortex scopes are in your range, Grassman.

For that price range I vote Nikon Prostaff 3-9x40. I've got one on my .17hmr and it's a pretty nice and clear scope for the money. I put a Super Sniper on my AR varmint rifle and it's a good scope too for around $300.

If your looking for a little more magnification than 3-9 the some friends of mine have had good luck with the Simmons Whitetail Classic on their AR's. One has one on a .223rem and the other one is on a .204rug upper. They seem to be pretty clear and hold zero well.

I've priced the Nikons, they can be had in the $250 range.
The prostaff's go for a lot less than that. Earlier this year I bought a combo, 3-9x40 prostaff and a 440 laser range finder for $300.

The best deal on the Nikon's are the Team Primos versions. Buckmaster prices with Monarch quaility glass. OK forget my last post this is what you should get for $200. Much better quality than the prostaff and far better than the Simmons.

I think the Nikons would give you the best value overall. Nikon Prostaff glass is very good.

I bought a Burris FFII Tactical 2-7x35 for my AR and it's GTG http://www.burrisoptics.com/fftactical1.html . I paid $180, and it generally goes for $200. Glass is OK, but not as good as Nikon. What sold it for me is that the tube is built for toughness, and the 1/2MOA click covered turrets. The reticle is the Burris Ballistic Plex which has hold overs for drop that is calibrated for different cartridges out to 500 yards or so. I haven't stretched the rifle out yet, so I can't say how it does at distance, but the turrets so far have been repeatable with different loads. The scope is perfect for an AR.

I'm glad I was lurking around and stumbled on this post - I had just placed a Barska scope on one of my wish-lists... considering changing that to Nikon or Bushnell now.

Each shooter saved from unknowingly purchasing crap equipment makes me happy.
