In that case, a mid-level Smith and Wesson M&P15 (not the sport model) would serve you just fine. They are ~$900 if you look around. Use the rest of your funds for range time and ammo.

IMHO you don't really need a Colt, RR, BCM, etc unless you're using it for duty or competition. Sure they are great, but learning to shoot properly is more important.

dBent, as you've seen, opinions on ARs vary widely. As I stated before, I consider the likes of Colt, BCM, Daniel Defense and other of that class to be a step above the likes of Rock River, Stag, DPMS, etc.

I have more experience with ARs than most and not as much as some. Of the dozen or so ARs that I've had, I only bought one complete rifle. I built all of the others for varying purposes from M4ish builds to precision rifles. I've also built rifles for friends. I've used parts from varying manufacturers. I've also become somewhat of the AR expert among the people that I know and shoot with and have fixed many more rifles than I've built.

What I've found is that there are a lot of good manufacturers out there that build rifles that will get the job done. I expressed the opinion that I did based on one simple thing. That is the likelihood of having problems with any particular brand and I ranked those that I felt were a rung above the others based on the fact that I've seen fewer problems with them.

If you are experienced with ARs, know how they operate and know what each part does, then you can likely buy some third rate rifle at a bargain and likely keep it shooting the way it's supposed to. On the other hand, if you don't have a lot of experience with ARs, then a very minor problem can have you tearing your hair out and having to ship a brand new rifle back and forth trying to work out a problem.

I've seen DPMS rifles with pre-mature ring failure. Extractor/spring failure. Barrels torqued so tightly that the POI did weird things when the rifle heated up. Barrels that were so loose that the handguards shimmied back and forth.

On Rock Rivers, I've seen pre-mature trigger failure on the two stages. Canted front sights. Misaligned gas blocks. Extractor failures, etc. The same with Stags.

I won't say that I've never had to fix a Colt, BCM or Daniel Defense, but those that did need fixing were due to have some parts replaced due to use.

My point is that for a first time AR owner, you will have a better chance of not running into problems by going with an upper tier manufacturer.

I will say, however, that the guys that I know that got into Delton rigs seem to like them and I haven't seen any of them tearing their hair out. I'll also say that Smith and Wesson has made it to the list of OK'd makes for some LEO departments where I am and those guys aren't having any problems with those either.

A popular rig, just based on what they tell me when I see them in court and around is some flavor of Smith with an Aimpoint Pro package. The guys that are getting them have to buy their own rifle and this combo has been a good bang for the buck for these guys.

Now, I don't want to open a can of worms with this and this is just what I've seen; but the "better" makes seem to have fewer problems running steel cased ammo, if that matter to you.

On a last note, whatever you get, I'd recommend some flavor of 16" with a midlength gas system. You'll be less likely to suffer some of the common problems associated with the carbine length gas system.

As usual I agree with Tony.

My first AR was a Delton and the only problem I ever had was it started double popping @ about 500 rounds. Called Delton and they sent me a complete trigger assembly; great company in my experience and I never had another problem. Maybe another flavor would not have had the problem to begin with..... CMMGs I have 4 and never a problem; good accurate weapons.... I even own Bushmasters ( which some consider are nothing more than empty soup cans) which seem to work for me and others that I know that have them. I have seen some nice Double Stars as far as fit and finish and their owners seem to be rather pleased (especially when purchased for $599); they had a sale last year and a few of the guys picked some up....

Again good luck

Unlike some of our members I only hunt and do the occasional paper thing so mine are very seldom ridden hard and never put up wet unless CLP is considered wet. Sorry it's an old Tx saying.....

One thing that is great about the AR platform you can change anything that breaks or does not suit you....I just want a good barrel and anything else I can change or fix as necessary if it breaks or does not function properly.

None of my weapons are loose or rattle and the fit and finish are as good as any other weapon I have been around for mine were mostly hand picked by me; but I ain't no expert just an old pig popper......so you can take what I say or toss it; one size never fits all. What drives guys crazy is when someone buys something at a price point that they could have had a V8 for the same price!!

I vote Bushmaster. I have an ORC and I love it. It's totally reliable, and I've never had a single issue with it. We carried Mil-surp Colts in the cruiser, but my Bushmaster out shined it every time. Just my humble opinion, but I'm sticking with Bushmaster for a long time. GREAT customer service too.

I have two Spikes Tactical AR's. One is 6.8 SPC with a Lothar Walther stainless barrel. It is more accurate than I am. Check there site or call and speak to Kate, but I think they could build a 5.56 with the LW barrel with upgrades and stay in your price range.

I paid a hair over 1300 for my DDM4 and couldn't be happier.

Buy once, cry once. The DDM4 is the best 'bang for the buck' in the AR game at that price point, IMO.

I've also heard great things about Bravo Co. as well, but I have no personal experience with them.

Best of luck to you!

Smith and Wesson. Great warranty.

My Sport punches paper very well at 200 yards plus and the 5R rifling is a progressive 1:8 so the accuracy is very good with light or heavy grain ammo.

Ok. So many varied opinions and I completely went off the reservation with this one. But I just ordered a sig Sauer m400 enhanced in od green. Since there is no real consensus and accuracy is important and I couldn't find anyone to say anything bad about sig and I already own a sig p229 that I love.....all good reasons for me. Plus I was at a gun show a few weeks ago...held one....and it was always in the back of my mind. I kept writing it off because of mil spec this and that...but I kept hearing what one of you guys said about how mil spec doesn't equal accuracy. Since I am mostly shooting targets, that is important.
This discussion has been fun, but the next post I have will be pictures and my review from the range. I would be interested in hearing what you all think about my off the reservation decision. Can't change it now....but would be interested none the less.

Congrats lets us know how it works out for you.

Here it is

AR Group.jpg

Only real issue is that the Sig Sauer M400 Enhanced did not come with a hardcase. Any AR that costs $1000 should come with a hard case. I picked up a UTG soft case though that fits it perfectly. So no big deal.
This group was at 50 yards at an indoor range. Not a bad start and I am not even a great shot.
Thanks to everyone for your advice. Now I am going to buy a .30-06. Got my eye on a Savage FCNS.
Does this addiction ever end?
