I have a flat top Ar15 and have been using a scope, I decided to get some irons for it and to ditch the scope. I got a Rock River Arms detachable carry handle with rear sight. I just need a front sight now, do I need to get a special height or anything like that?

I am just wondering what iron sight would work well in the front.

Thanks.

I was looking there but are they different heights or does height not matteR?

One thing to do is email RRA and let them know what you have and what they think would work best for you.

I was under the impression that, in general/unless otherwise indicated, AR-15 sights were designed to be the same height. But not having shopped for sights, I don't actually know. I just used the ones that came with mine.

Anyone what to school me on that so we know for sure?

It depends on if your using a 16" barrel or a 20" barrel. If it is a 16" barrel to do it right you need a .040 taller "F" FSB. If it is a 20" barrel the standard FSB would be the correct height.

Are you mounting the sight on a railed gas block or free float tube because thats where the height issuue will come in

This raises a good point. Are you trying to mount a sight on a railed tube or a rail at the front gas block? Removable front sight bases come in two different heights depending on whether they mount on a railed tube or if they mount on the gas block. The taller one mounts on the gas block. The shorter one mounts on a tube rail.

The sight post itself also comes it two sizes. A taller post is often used for the short sight radius of CAR/M4 carbines that have the taller removable rear carry handle sight. (Real Colt M4s and some other manufacturers use a standard sight post, but raise the sight block itself using a taller "F" marked front sight block).

16" carbines with Midlength gas systems (longer sight radius), Dissipator type (full length sight radius on a 16" barrel), and full length 20" rifles and any AR15 with a fixed carry handle should use the shorter sight post. So basically only CAR/M4 carbines with detachable carry handles and non- "F" marked from sight bases should need the taller sight post.

For Clarity:

I have a RRA removable carry handle on a flat top receiver. I need the correct sight that will be mounted on a railed gas block. I have a DPMS Panther Sportical, 16' barrel.

most online stores list if the sights are ment for forearm or gas block, the majority are for gas blocks but just check the description before you buy and you dont have to worry about the tall post

:DI like how you marked your thread with the "Achtung!" icon, like the world will end if you don't get your front sight immediately! :neener:

Then again, guns are pretty useless without them...

If you had a free floating handguard and mounted the frontsight to that (the handguard vrs. the barrel), wouldn't you lose accuracy as the barrel heated up and moved to wherever?

Just a quick thought that popped up.
