I have a 16 inch barrel M-4 style AR-15 with a scope. i have only had it for a while and it is my first real modern gun. can you recommend an easy to use sling or strap? basic one that works, does not need to be tooled leather or such. this will be mostly for range use.
thanks

Are you looking for a "tactical" type sling or a shooting sling? If you want a shooting sling, a cheap m1 web sling works well for very little money. If you want a tactical style sling, the VTAC would be my choice.

After carrying an M16/M4/AR15 for years I would recommend a standard 2 point military web sling. They seem to be the most comfortable to me. I have tried the single point, two point and three point slings. YMMV. Just my honest opinion.

The V-TAC is the best thing since sliced bread! Wonderful, quickly adjustable sling that is vastly more useful than your average carrying strap.

A very, very good Vickers-style sling for those on a budget is the Victory series 2-point by Blue Force Tactical, which can be had for under $40. It quick-adjusts like their more expensive slings, but doesn't have all the padding and whatnot. The straps are wide enough that it's still quite comfortable, though.

The Blue Force page above also has single-point and three-point slings if you prefer, but I really like the quick-adjust 2-point for an all-around sling.

Magpul MS2.

You'll need some sort of single point attachment loop, MI or Magpul has those.

I like this sling because it's the best single point, but if you have a forward sling mount you can switch it over to a regular 2 point sling quickly. So if your just standing around, 1 quick snap puts the sling into a more comfortable 2 point mode.

If you just want a cheap 2-point sling to carry it and use for steadying your aim on occasion, the GI web sling is probably a good budget solution.

The quick-adjust two point slings give you a lot more versatility on how you can use the rifle though. Typically you can get into good versions of those for around $40.+
