AR 15 trigger, just the trigger

I'm having a total knee replacement and want to build my own cane. Looking at canes I've decided that it would be fun to make it look like a gun cane. ANY inspection would show that the "barrel" would be the turned wood. The only part in the handle would be the trigger which will be cut and pinned into the wood. It would look like a trigger but would be immobile. I know this should be a $12? part but can't seem to find just the trigger for sale. The cane will never make it to an airport or other place of don't bring it here. Ideas?

 

As a rehab therapist, I highly recommend not modifying a cane for real usage. Likely you'll be using a front wheeled walker at first anyways. I teach pre-op classes so if you're nervous about your surgery, lemme know and we can chat.

Making a firearm that looks like a cane will require one to file a Form 1 for making an AOW. This goes for any type of firearm that is disguised to look like something else. So if you were to make a gun cane, it better look like a firearm unless you want to file a Form 1 and register it with the ATF first.

 

I think you missed that bus, 12Bravo20. The OP said he's specifically not making a firearm that looks like a cane. He's making a cane look like a firearm and other than having someone mistake it as one and shoot him if he gets waving it around, a permission slip from the principle is not needed. That being said, I'd sure spray the "business end" of any such cane I would make with some bright orange paint like all them little Walmart plastic toys....

 

Normally a total knee SHOULD be a short term disability depending on age. Seems like a lot of work for so little use. Just my .03

 

Hey thanks! I'm 2 weeks post and can walk unaided but keep a cane - just in case. Other passions are wood and metal. The land cleared for our house had, amongst others, Black Walnut and Maple. Adding a bit of stainless steel for jewelry and it's rather nice. The NRA show is on my schedule. I plan on a cane for the walkabout. I came up with the idea that a mock "gun-cane" would be interesting. To the point of looking more steampunk than cane. Very obvious that it's a piece of wood with a trigger. I was a intensive care RN and did stints with a buddy of mine who was the floor charge RN of the ortho floor. That was some time ago. Back then the CPM's were quite prevalent and I hated them. As soon as ya got your pt. all rigged up it was time to go. And time to start over. A lot of those knees were in Beta at that time and many of those became class action lawsuits. Today it SDS. Time's are a changing. I gotta admit I liked being on the other side of a stethoscope. Thanks for the assistance. Very kind to offer support. Well, if you have a woodshop and a passion to create, perhaps you would understand that not all work is work and end products are not valued for their time in service. The antics, laughter and enjoyment my friends and I will have as well as the well humored folks at NRA's, should be more than worth the time and effort.

Didn't mean to insult you. I too have hobbys. I was laid up at different times for cartilalige repair twice , two ruptured quad tendons and coulden't ride my Harleys and sat around and reads books. Glad things went well with the knee. My wife had both done, one good one not so good. The first cartilage (medial maniscus) was in 1964. They sliced it open and removed it completly Be well

 

Ouch! Sorry about that. I was an RN waaaaay back when they just started to do knees. Those were all in Beta and most ended up in class action lawsuits. So I really didn't want to do this. Now? I got half of it done with a robot. Doubt i can sue a robot...?

 

Maybe I did "miss the boat" here. But I would feel remiss if I didn't say anything at all. Not everyone is familiar with all of the different NFA laws.

 

My wife had one done around 14 years ago and the surgeon specifically stated no walking aids. No walker, no cane, nothing. She didn't have a bit of trouble and still doesn't. No robots back then. All done by the hands of a man.

 

Need a striker fire rig.

 

Ummm... Perhaps? Pic? I plan on milling a trigger guard, cutting off about 1/4th of it. Cutting off most of the trigger and milling flats behind it. These flats should fit into the removed portion of the trigger guard. TaDa! A circle with a trigger in it. If I want to try to get fancy, I might try to mill an oval for the guard. Striker fired? As in flint? If so, there can't be a bunch of stuff on top of the cane. "cuz it's a cane and the handle is important.
