I'm looking for a upper receiver that has the 11.5" bbl. with the 5.5" flash suppressor attached and with the A1 rear sight/carrying handle (non-removable). Bushmaster has it with the A2 rear sight and does not offer any other variation. Basically, it's similar to the Colt "Commando", but with the 16 plus inch barrel. Does anyone out there know who makes such an upper?

I bought a Model 1 Sales inc kit when I built my first AR - A2 upper, 16" heavy barrel with a 5" REVERSE flash hider - LOOKS like a 11" bbl w/5" flash hider - But it allows me to use the 16" barrel (less loud bang & flash). Model 1 Sales has just about any variation you might want - parts, kits. or completely assembled uppers. Check their web sight. (Same is probably avail through many other dealers.)

Google XM177 upper
Make sure that flashhider is welded/blind-pinned/ or silver soldered on the barrel and not removable unless you want to register the lower as a SBR.

That one dan3 mentioned sounds like a good idea. The thing I don't like about that setup is you get all the noise and velocity loss of an 11.5" barrel but the less maneuverability of a 16". Kind of the worst of both worlds IMO. They do look wicked though

Thanks for the info. I checked out Model 1 Sales, they only offer it with the A2 sight. I'm looking for the A1 sight/carrying handle, if its still offered.

"A2" doesn't mean detachable carry handle. You can get A2 sights in a fixed carry handle upper too. Are you really set on the A1 sight, or are you after the fixed handle?

I'm aware the A2 does not mean removable carry handle, that would be the
A3. The terminology I used is work related and force of habit. I’m looking for the A1 rear sight with the 11.5" barrel and the 5.5" flash suppressor.

A-1 upper

Check the for sale sections on the many different gun forums. I have seen quite a few A-1 uppers for sale.
I you are a builder, many stripped uppers are available from different makers.
Search the net for A-1 uppers.
You can get a slick side upper from a few places also.
One site even makes an upper which was experimental, charging handel looks like an upside down trigger ala the original AR 10.

I'm thinking that's the way I have to go, meaning, building the upper. My game plan is to make a retro XM177 and the more I think about it, I would like it without the forward bolt assist.
