i have never owned any semi auto rifles except my 22lr. so i have a question about the ar style rifles (and i guess any gas system semi auto). how often do you have to do a full teardown of the rifle and clean up the gas tube and piston? is it an every time proposition? is it difficult? what about something like a 7400 or 750 remington? like i said, i just do not lnow. lately, i have benn wanting more guns (go figure, right?) and i have been torn between an ar, or something like a 243 in a remington or similar, and a 44 or 45 revovlver. at this point, i dont know which way to go. it is probably a good thing i have a little time, since the money will have to come from either income tax refund, or a stimulus check, if we get one.

You might want to clarify a little bit.

The basic AR-15 pattern rifle is run off of a Direct-Impingement Gas System. There is no piston. Combusted gas is fed from the gas port, through the gas tube, back into the bolt carrier where it charges the weapon.

There are gas piston uppers and full rifle available, but be looking to spend a quite bit more, from my understanding.

And my my military experience, I have NEVER seen an M4 or M16 need the gas port or gas tube cleaned. If anything, thats a civilian job. They wouldn't trust an armorer or grunt to do that.

The Ar-15 pattern rifle will work to your needs, as long as you treat it like its yours, with TLC. They have tighter tolerances, but overall its a great platform. Keep the chamber, bolt carrier, bolt, firing pin/channel, upper receiver clean, and expect years of performance from your rifle.
